I had six to start with but four have died over the years (natural causes!) I rescued them from someone who was going to kill them because he was not allowed to keep them in the garden of his rented flat! I had the chickens 4 years ago, the remaining two are still healthy and strong, I have heard they can live up to 12 years but not sure of their actual ages. They are very easy to keep, mine roam the back garden, as long as they are well enclosed they are fine. They sleep in a very large converted rabbit hutch. We used to get eggs galore but these two are getting old now so don't lay as much, and when they do they eat their own eggs! But that's not a problem as they are only kept as pets. They eat Layers pellets and corn, available from a few select Garden Centres.
They make great pets but will eat any greenery in the garden including best plants and grass so a plot of unkempt land is ideal.
You can buy special cages so they can't roam around as much and destroy your entire garden.
They will chase off cats! Great little characters! -

2 or 3 is a good number, any more and they can be noisy!
If you know of any farms nearby where they sell eggs, it may be worth asking them if you can have a couple of birds if they do a cull. For a business they want younger birds so you may save the lives of two perfectly good older birds! They will probably still be laying but as they get older they don't lay as much, so Farmer's have to make way for new stock. I don't know much about that side of things as mine have only ever been kept as pets but I do know that chickens are kept as layers by some Farmers for only a limited time.
Cats have never been a problem with mine. Dogs would probably kill them but cats usually run when they see an angry hen chasing after them! -
