honda civic 1.6i ls,unknown prob

hi i just bought this car a month back but the thing is i dont know too much about car engines and probs, i have a problem with a car which i cant understand the problem is it doesn't catch up speed some times when i switch from second to third gear , and other thing is when i start the car and it is idle it start choking like its not getting proper fuel or something , plz help me out guys ill b grateful
