I have recently purchased a used 2 years old Honda Civic 1.6SE VTEC Automatic with full Honda dealer's service record & with only just 11,000 miles driven. It is in excellent condition throughout. I filled the petrol tank ( approximately 9 gallons) and it surprisingly emptied just after 200 miles. I assumed that the trip meter might have been reset accidently but second time I have just managed to drive 210 miles with about 9 gallons i.e. about 23 mpg driven locally! According to motoring magazines, pricing guides & the former owner, I expected to achieve an average of about 35 mpg. I shall be grateful if someone tell me what is wrong with the vehicle or with my driving? I am a mature driver & drive gently. I have read some reviews where 45 mpg has been mentioned.

It all depends on how and where you drive. On my 98 Honda civic Aerodeck there is a little green light that pops up when you are driving economically. The old owner couldn't get it on above 60 but I can keep it on up to 75. Its all about how you drive. It is also auto and if you rev then let off you will use more fuel. Cars always do better on a long run.
