yesterday some idiot came too quickly round a corner and broke my right wing mirror! The glass is fine but the plastic bit broke (it is currently stuck on with very strong tape....)
is it possible to get the plastic bit replaced without having the glass replaced? (to save cost) - if so, roughly how much do you reckon this would cost?
if not, how much would it cost to have the whole thing replaced?
it is a vauxhall astra - R reg.
Thanks!! -

I think you might be better off replacing the whole thing because of the mechanism that adjusts the mirror.
Have a look in the Yellow Pages or Thompson directory and look for your nearest salvage yard. Many people wince at salvage yards, if you've never been to one, they can be quite intimidating with all those mechanic types! But they are the best places in the world to get things like mirrors, lights/lenses, panels, etc. I'll bet you'll only pay £15, maybe £20 max from a salvage yard (you may even be able to get one without the glass in it if you ask them). I wouldn't recommend going to a Vauxhall dealer, they'll charge at least £50-£60.
The only thing is you'll either have to fit it yourself, or get a local garage to fit it for you, there would be labour costs, but it should only take a few minutes.
I used to have a Renault 5 that broke THREE indicator lenses (at different times), two at the front and one at the back. I got new ones from my local salvage yard each time and they were in perfect condition.
Hope that helps a bit. -

thanks for your reply
i should have mentioned - the mechanism for moving the wing mirror is also still fine - it literally is just the plastic rim. do you still think i need to replace the whole thing? -

Hmm, maybe not then.
In that case it might just be worth going to the salvage yard and seeing what they've got. You might be able to get just the plastic housing. There's no harm in asking, they can only say no. And if they do say no, then you could just take the mirror and mechanism out and keep them as spares, or sell them on E-bay! -

Good Morning, This guy is 100% right, Best place to get your used car parts from are breaker yards. However like he also said some people can be intimidated by them, however we put you in control by getting the breaker yards to go to you, wanting your business. if you recieve 4 quotes from salvage yards, you have the choice which 1 to go for, and you can do it all from the comfort of your living room. so finding car parts couldn't be easier, hope this helps mate.

i had both my wing mirrors repaired by www.wingmirrorrepair.com First I only needed one done so I phoned up and within two days a lovely guy came around and fitted my mirror. He completly replaced it. it was only £55 for supply and fit which is amazing as i had been quoted £185 fat he cheapest from other companies!. I was recommended to the comapny by a guy in a local shop, wasnt sure whether to try after all high prices i was quoted but it was well worth it.
Very recommended
