What lens?

I have recently bought a Nikon D-50 18-55 lens kit, and am looking to upgrade my lens for a higher quality one. Will I really see a difference in overall image quality by buying a better lens? I tend to like vivid colour and do my very best with what I a have to create nice skin tones, but I feel that my lens is only getting me so far.

Would anybody be able to tell me of any good lenses taking into account these preferences?
