Hi there, Just thought I would start a thread about long range open sighted target shooting,

i.e. .22 rimfires at 50-100m and anything larger from 200-800 yards.

I regularly shoot rimfires at 25 yards and 7.62 rifles at 300-800 yards,

I get consistant scores of 32 out of 36.7, and aproximatly 93/100 average with a .22.

    I also fire L98-A1's at 100-300M and get aprox 90mm groups at 100m, 120mm groups at 200m and 160mm groups at 300M.

Just wondering what you're experiance is with such weapons,

Thats a shame because its a great experiance.

Went to a competition the other weekend where I fired at 300 and 500M, our team won the whole thing and I got in top 12 Very Happy

    deadeye or bom bom,

If you measure target groupings, do measure the distance of the longest shots from outside the holes in or the distance of the longest shots from center to center of the holes?

I measure my groups from the two furthest points.

When you measure, do you measure from the center of the farthest two holes in the target grouping.

Some people use the outside of the holes and subtract the caliber or mm. Some use the inside of one and the outside of the other. But always using the farthest two points.

if there were two rounds. One in the 9 at a 9 o'clock position and another in the 10 at a 3 o'clock position I would measure my group from the furthest edge of the right bullet hole to the furthest edge of the left bullet hole. If I fired one shot from a .22 rifle that would leave a 5.56 mm group or .223.

I want to shoot something a little more powerful than a .22lr. Shells for a .22 magnum run around .15 cents a shell and don't offer a whole lot more. Center fire ammo for surplus (corrosive) and some new (non-corrosive) runs about 8 to 20 cents a shell.

I've been looking at used 8mm 1938 type mausers made outside Germany and was wondering if there are any good ones to look for? Yugo, CZ, Turkish...etc...

    Also, 7.62x54R 1930 type Mosin-Nagant, mainly russian?

Some 7.62x39 romainian new and used wasr-10 or ak47 or yugo new or used sks or ak47 etc.....?

Some 5.45x39 roamainian new and used wasr-2 or ak47 etc..?

Seen and enfield 2A in good shape that shot .308 or 7.62x51...but shells run a little more.

For the money I like the 8mm mauser and the 7.62x54R. I lot of bang for the buck, but trying to find something that shoots well is hard. There are so many surplus new rifles.

I would go for the enfield. Just my preferance as they're so beautiful

wouldn't be too bad, 174 grain 2400 fps (2200 ft/lbs) british berdan (non-reload) non corrosive fmj ammo runs about 6 shells for 1 dollar. Not sure how well surplus non-corrosive ammo will perform. Usually corrosive ammo seems to keep longer. Seen some nice no4 mk1.
