I have been texted by O2 that my Philips C12 will not work after May 31st 2006 due to the old technology related to it. They have sent me a new mobile so that I can upgrade to a new tariff.
Is this information correct or is it just sales talk from O2 to get me to upgrade?

They can block the phone by the IMEI so it will not work.
If they are going to do this, then you should get the new phone from them for free. MAybe the phone is really old and you may be better off getting the new phone before this one completely goes. -

Thanks for reply.
The phone is old - 1999 - but I get very inexpensive texts - 5pence - whether at home or abroad which I am reluctant to lose. (I don't use enough texts to warrant 'bolt ons').
I have been sent a new phone but haven't done anything about upgrading yet as I wanted to confirm that what I was being told was genuine and not just a selling gimmick!

It s a bit of both. They did it here in Ireland a few years ago, got rid of all the old 088 analogue phones and issued new phones. -

My Phillips C12 was cut off last week - no warning at all!! So obviously since I had phoned o2 and accepted a new free phone I was expected to upgrade once the new phone arrived. I'm still not sure what would have happened if I had not contacted them. Since they're not supplying you with a new phone you've nothing to lose by hanging on until May 31st to see if they do cut you off too. I'll be interested to hear what happens. -

Hi. It was about the beginning of March that I received the text from o2 about phone being cut off at end of May. Text instructed me to phone them which I did at that time and it was then that I was offered a new phone. I must have been on a different deal from you when I got my phone - Dec 1999 - as I didn't have the free friend. What I did have was texts costing 5pence whether from home or abroad, calls at 35pence per minute at home or £1.50 per minute from abroad. As it's really only texts I use it suited me very well. -

I found out by chance that my phone would be
unusable. We have 3 of them and only one of us got the message.
Phoned them and they said that service was old and that they would not be able to use it after 30th June.
The truth is the phone will work with a new sim card. My husband had to replace his last year with a new one from them.
I asked for the IMEI code to open it up to other networks I did not want to use 02 if they could do this to us.
They could not get the code because the phone is over 7 years old anyway it would cost me £20.
I only use my phone for emergency's and it is more solid then these new ones that break at the first knock.
