50 inch plasma tv's are now coming down in price significantly. They seem to all have the 1366 x 768 pixel screen and have quite a wow factor. Has anyone out there got one and can give an opinion? I am particularly interested in the Philips 50PF9967D.

    Question

I dont know about you, but i surely dont like when a plasma TV looses its picture after a few years. Sure, the plasma is thin, but thats all it has. The picture quality is nothing near a projection lcd or even lcd. added to that, they are much cheaper and an all around better investment.

Each to his own I suppose. Plasma's last around 25,000 hours. Even at 5 hours per day average that would be 14 years! And that is the point when they may start to lose their contrast.

Can't see an LCD being better than a plasma for picture quality. They are too bright - well suited for cartoons I suppose, if that's what you watch, or for computer use.

Avoid LCD. They are really only good for computers.

There are some amazing quality 50" Plasma screens available on the market now. The PDP-506XDE is for sure, the best plasma available on the market. Cheaper alternatives such as the Samsung PS50Q7HD and the LG 50PX4D are also good HD Ready screens.

    Plasma Vs LCD.

Well it depends on a few factors.

    1) What you are going to watch on it?

2). What contrast ratio you are looking for?

    3) What size of screen you are going to get.

Smaller screens 32" and below for normal home use. LCD all the way.

Larger screens for home and commercial use. Either through a PC or HD. Plasma/projection is your best option.

But at the end of the day we all see things differently and it is better to see the screen in action before you decide what screen is best for your viewing pleasure.

Have just bought a Samsung LE50Q7HD and wow. The picture is fantastic.

I bought it to link up to the new PS3 so that my wife and I could reclaim the living room, hoping the kids and their friends would stay in the play room. However, we've not left the play room since buying it, and now the living room sits empty (it only has an LG 32 LCD which looks so small now). As mentioned, anything on HD (games or DVDs) looks absolutely fantastic. There is no discernable pixelation and everything looks photo quality. I recommend you play with the display settings to get things how you like them, but once you have, it really does blow you away. I think the "movie" setting looks best, even on games. I don't have Sky HD (yet) so this limits the quality of display for TV programmes, but still the picture quality is very good.

The sound needs to be turned up quite high when watching DVDs on the PS3. Don't know if this a function of the TV or the PS3. Certainly the sound is not outstanding generally, but more than acceptable for my use. You could always boost this with a separate sound system.

Having paid just under £1100 for it, I'm more than made up, and three out of four of the family think it's the best think we've ever bought for the house (although the dog was also quite a good buy, OK, second best thing).
