need help in installing sony rdr-hxd710 dvd recorder

Can somebody help please ... just purchased sony rdr-hxd710, have followed instructions and can play pre-recorded DVD's. However cannot get it to store or tune in any tv channels. I have a phillips tv and a Cable analogue box and no rooftop aerial. Anyone any ideas? In the manual it does say "switch the input selector on your TV so that the signal from the recorder appears on the your TV screen" what and where is the input selector??
