I have a Sony VGN-FS315B that is defective straight from the box.
The Optical Drive/Data read is defective meaning that I cannot install any software. Sony will only offer to repair the Laptop, but look at the small print in the terms and conditions and you see "they reserve the right to use Reconditioned parts" to effect a repair. So you end up with a Repaired product, with/without second hand parts for the price of a new Laptop.
Sony Support is just about the worst that I have ever seen, most of them would have trouble spelling PC let alone mend one.
I am wondering how many other people there are that have received a defective product from Sony that they refuse to refund on?
Personally I will avoid anything Sony in the future, Poor Quality products built on a reputation formed long ago. -

Sony have built up a reputation for solid products. They will lose it very quickly with this kind of customer service.
1. You should be able to get your money back on any product within 7 days of purchase - according to your 'statutary rights'. It may even be 14 days.
2. Even if it says they will only repair with reconditioned parts in the small print if that is not acceptable you can complain to Trading Standards who will make them comply with their requirements.
