    Hi,

I recently bought a Sony VAIO VGN-S3HP laptop. Ever since I received the unit I have had the same problem. When booting from cold, the machine appears to boot (LEDs green and can hear processor) but nothing happens on the screen. If I turn the machine off and re-boot, it starts up fine. This happens whether the battery pack inserted or it is just running off the AC power. I sent the unit back to Sony last week and they replaced the hard disk (?) and returned it. It still has the same problem! Also, it seems to be missing a system file?

Any suggestions as to what the problem might be?!

I've had the same fault but its gradually been getting worse, might start after 3 or 4 on/off cycles or might take 50! I've just sent my vaio back to Sony. Its 3 years old and the same fault was repaired by PC World 18 months ago by replacing the motherboard but I also had a broken DC power contact which was making mains connection difficult and, apparently, its part of thee motherboard.

PC World said the screen fault was just a contact.

Sony have had it 5 days now and no diagnosis yet.

    watch this space.

Hope that throws some light in a dark place and wishing you all the best.

It seems that sony are not that reliable and that their name does not stand for much when it come to laptops. My Vony vaio (bought for £1500) has just broken down again! the first time it just crashed and i ent it in to repair under warranty. this time the power socket ha worked it way loose to the point where no power can into my battery so it is baically dead and they refuse to repair it saying that it is my fault. It is not i have done nothing other than use the thing. I'd would be very intersted to knowif anyone has had similar problems. I am going to buy an apple next time they are superior in every way.. sony i am now realizing are a sham organisation and do not care one tupence about you after they have taken your money. THEIR DEsIGN AND THEIR sERVICE Is APPALLING !

    hi!
    How to store batteries?

A: The recommended storage temperature for most batteries is 15°C (59°F). While lead-acid batteries must always be kept at full charge, nickel and lithium-based chemistries should be stored at 40% state-of-charge (SoC). This level minimizes age-related capacity loss, yet keeps the battery in operating condition even with some self-discharge. While the open terminal voltage of nickel-based batteries cannot be used to determine the SoC accurately, voltage fuel gauging works well for lithium-ion cells. However, differences in the electrochemistry of the electrodes and electrolyte between manufacturers vary the voltage profile slightly. A SoC of 50% reads about 3.8V; 40% is 3.75V. Store lithium-ion at an open terminal voltage of 3.75-3.80V. Allow the battery to rest 90 minutes after charge before taking the voltage reading.
