It is possibly a phantom pregnancy - I had a cat that had these. Shocked

It would be useful to know what signs she is/was actually displaying. If she has become maternal i.e. mothering toys, being clingy, swollen belly then this could be a false pregnancy. It is more common in spayed dogs than cats and it will occur approx 9 weeks after the operatrion. However if she is displaying signs of being in heat, i.e. 'flirting' vocalising, lourdosis (lowering of back, quivering tail) there is a slight possibility that when she was spayed a tiny bit of her ovary was left behind causing hormones to still be produced stimulating the on heat signs. Considering how many cats are spayed it is a very uncommon occurrence. This would be something you need to ask your vet about. A blood test can confirm this now, previously we used to have to just operate again. I hope this helps Exclamation Laughing

My 6 year old 'rescued' cat is spayed, but retains both her ovaries (Spanish vets don't normally remove ovaries) and shows all the signs of being 'in season' and phantom prgnancies. She also pulls lumps of hair out from her tummy and backs of her legs. (? to line her 'nest'). She has been taken to 2 different vets but neither has come up with an answer to this hair loss. Is it possible that it is connected with the phantoms?

If she were my cat I'd have her ovaries removed she could be stressed by calling and having phantom pregnancies and the stress could show as fur pulling, it can't be v. nice for her when she cannot actually have kittens. There are other reasons for fur pulling aside from stress. Have there been changes in the home/new pets etc? Has she been ill recently, or does she have a skin sensitivity to e.g. fleas or a diet. Assuming none of these apply then I would have to try removing her ovaries to see if it helped. Cats don't normally line a nest with there fur but hormones can cause fur loss, combine this with stress you may have an answer! If you haven't already I would discuss this idea with a vet and get their opinion. I hope I have helped

I think this forum is not active any more, anyway, I accidentally came across with this website and saw this post. Spanish vets normally DO remove ovaries, and womb, in fact, Id be very surprise to hear a vet doesnt... I am a Spanish vet myself. It makes no sense spaying an animal and not removing the ovaries. Just to let you know, so maybe yours was somehow an isolated case? Not sure... Sometimes, a bit of ovaric tissue may have been ACCIDENTALLY left behind... but its strange, and not that common if you are an experienced surgeon... so get your cat checked with your local vet.....
