NODISK - toshiba sd-5915su

My Toshiba sd-5915su 5-disk DVD player will play audio CD's but will not recognize DVD's. I have tried several different disks which all play well in other machines but not this one. What do these symptoms indicate, any theories? Are CD's data less dense, or something like that, so that a weak or misaligned laser will read them while failing to read more densely stored data like that on a DVD? It tries for a long time to read the DVD and finally says "NODISK". CD's are read fairly quickly and seem to play fine. I am using prerecorded official movie and music releases not disks I have burned myself.
