I want to buy a new hi fi system. The thing is, most of my music is on is tunes on my laptop (i-book). would i be able to connect my laptop to the system with a cable, using the headphone port maybe, so i could play the i tunes music through it? or would it better to just buy speakers? if so which? i dont want to spend more than about £200, but want something loud with good quality... -

Yes i have done this in the past playing music i have created . The best speakers you can buy for £200 i reckon would definetly be the Monitor Audio Bronze B2's . Accompanied buy a NADC320BEE amplifier. This is a very good combination. Obviously you would need to buy good quality speaker cables such as QED Silver anniversary. You will unfortunately lose sound quality when processing through a pc laptop which is your only drawback although you have thousands of songs at your finger tips.
Good luck hop i helped -

First, you want to get an external soundcard that improves the sound - check here for suggestions - http://forum.audiogon.com/cgi-bin/fr.pl?icomp & 1088427969 & read & 3 & 4 &
And then simply get a monitor speaker - the ones with the amp built in - like Swan m200 - http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16836136102
I don't know where you are from - but this is within your price range - even with international shipping.
You can also check ebay on your country for good sounding monitors like Mackie Monitor - http://www.imuso.co.uk/ProductDetail.asp?StockCode=ST00131
NAD - monitor audio is not bad either - but upgrade the soundcard to an external USB one - you can pick one up on ebay cheap. -

to play music from your laptop to hi fi you either have two options:
1. get a CD re-writer!
2. do what I've done and get a 3.5mm jack to phono and connect the 3.5mm jack (exactly the same as an earphone jack) to where you would normally connect your speakers on your laptop to, and then if you lucky enough to have an MD IN/PHONO IN connect the phono leads to your hi fi, select the MD or PHONO function on your hi fi then your of to go!
hope this helps

If you have a wireless connection in your laptop then I couldn't recommend highly enough apple's airport express. This little gadget has served me extremely well and I play all of my music (250gb external hard drive containing a months worth of non-stop music) through it.
Hope this helps.
