Testing for alcohol content

Can you help, im a serving prison officer, im trying to brew some prison style hooch as a project for myself in order to be able to recognise the stuff should i come across it at work, what id like to know is there a way of testing for alcohol volume or to confirm if alcohol is present in a liquid, ive had two occaisons where i have found what i believed was hooch but couldnt prove it! hence this little project. any help or advice would be great. Thanks
