Expert advice needed!

I have a Y reg Mondeo and it failed its MOT on Saturday because of something to do with the rear calliper. When I took it to the garage they said there wasn't anything wrong with the calliper but the release mechanism was stuck in the open position. They also said that my rear brakes needed replacing as they were rimmed (it's all Greek to me). The garage has had my car since 8 am today and I haven't heard anything yet (3.30 pm). They said the brake parts would cost £196 but couldn't tell me how much it would cost altogether.

Does anybody know how long this job should take and what sort of price am I looking at?
