LCD screen has stopped woking

I have just bought a cheapo MP3 player from ebay and have downloaded music without probs, but when I turn it on the display screen is blank, any ideas what I have done, please be gentle with me as I know nothing about computers etc.

That happened to one of my friends, his guess was that he downloaded a corrupted file that dameged the mp3 player. He could not fix it so he went to the the shop he got it from with his reciept and he got a full refund.
