hair dying problem

my hair used to be dark brown, and today i died it (for the first time) into a colour supposed to be some kind of brown- reddish; well, i did exactly what was said in the instructions and now my hair somehow turned even darker then it was, it's basicly almost black that looks a bit reddish or purplish in the sun...that's not what i wanted!
So my question is -if I can remove it, how?
and if not, how long do i have to wait to dye it again or what can i do to dye it now?
and what exactly was my mistake here and how can i prevent it from happening again? 'cause i hate it and i want to burn my hair...just kidding (about the burning not the hating of the hair)
