panasonic data cable not working

I have a pansonic X70 and I got a data cable so I can the photos off my phone onto the computer.
I bought a compatible cable and I cannot get it to find the phone.
I have various install options and it always shows up in the device manager section the way it is supposed to. It never has a ? on it and device manager says it is working properly. However when I connect the phone, the software says it is trying to connect to the phone but never manages to.
I have recently been able to connect a motorola V975 on the computer so I don't think it is the computer!
Also, ehen the cable is attatched to the phone the red light on the front of the phone lights up so power is getting to it.
Please help!
