The new NW-HD5 MP3 Player has just been launched by Sony to tackle the iPod and it looks like Apple has some serious upgrading to do to compete.

The NW-HD5 is considerably smaller and lighter than the now ancient iPod. Its removable battery has 40 hours playing time fully charged and can easily be replaced without having to send the player away.

It has a larger, rotating 7-line LCD display that swivels horizontally or vertically depending on the orientation of the player.

The built-in shock protection guards the hard drive against small drops and comes all wrapped up in a sexy aluminium body available in black, silver or red.

And Sony have managed to put all this together for less than the price of the iPod.

The first UK review is greatly impressed by the NW-HD5 and more specs are on Sony's website.
