Audio out of sync

Like everyone(?) out there I back up DVD's. I take the copies abroad to watch on a different DVD machine. I have an "old" (by today's standards) Pioneer machine at home that plays the back-ups no problem. Since this machine has trouble with older SVCD stuff I bought a cheap Tedelex DVD player that plays everything BUT I have the out of sync problem. Okay on original DVD's but not compressed copies. Is there any way of resolving this or is it just a case of try another player (a third party suggested Asda's Pacific)?
