Mp3's won't play on my computer anymore!

I've been using Mp3 files for years but when I recently opened my folder of music,the symbol beside each file had changed and I couldn't play them. Nothing happens when I try to open the file and when I use the Search program to try and find MP3's on my system,the computer doesn't recognise this type of file.
Any ideas or suggestions?
