Did any of you find out what the actual problem was - is it something anyone could fix with a bit of welding?

    Hi Guys

Mine is now doing exactly the same. I thought it was the optical port coz if i unplug and plug it back in again it works for a while. Very annoying. I might give sony a call and get the brush off Evil or Very Mad

Mine has started doing the same thing, I took the lid off and had a squint inside and there is a large capacitor on the pcb that the speakers plug into that has a large crack on the top. I assume this is what's been causing the problem, so unless you're happy whipping out a soldering iron and putting a new cap in it looks like a job for a professional repairer.

I fixed mine! Where the lead that connects the headphone socket (front of the unit) attaches to the sound board (back of the unit), the soldering was clearly hand-done when compared to the soldering on other parts of the chip board. Needed to re-solder this part of the board and it now works perfectly. Saved myself the repair fee but if you are not comfortable soldering you'll need a professional.

I fixed mine too - the cap wasn't cracked (trick of the light) but it was loose due to poor soldering. I resoldered it and also the connector for the headphone lead and it's now working perfectly.
    Happy soldering folks.

The bad solder joint on the rear headphone connection was my problem too. Got my Mom to do it -- her soldering was a lot better than the factory's - saved the 'throw it out the window' solution that was on the cards. Thanks for that. OH SONY ???? WHY HAVE YOU LOST CONCENTRATION ???? YOU USED TO BE GREAT !!!!

Mine was the same too. Took the lid off and noticed that the large capacitor near the back was loose. There were a few others that were the same too; I was shocked by the quality (or lack of) from this. Rolling Eyes
