Is it me or does the new 1 series look like the runt of BMW?
According to salesmen it looks better in the flesh, but I dont think I will be interested in test driving it.
Anybody know if Clarkson has commented yet? -

Ive got to agree - if i was spending BMW money id want a better looking car than this - take the badge off and it could almost be a kia or daewoo.
I havent actually got round to reading any road tests yet - does it drive any better than it looks

I took one for a spin at the weekend, and must say that it doesn't half drive well. The steering feels just great, probably helped by the RWD pushing it through the corners, the car stayed reasonably flat and unflustered when I chucked it into corners too.
The inside has a very nice quality look and feel, it certainly doesn't appear cheap at all.
I was driving the 120d with sports kit, which had plenty of grunt, and the sports stuff undoubtedly helped the ride.
If there was a downside I'd say it was the space. Being a sport-hatch and small, means it's just that, there isn't oodles of room.
On the looks side, I'd say it was odd, but with the lowered sports suspension, and 17" wheels it certainly looked quite nice.
Overall, having test driven it, I'd say it was really a very good car to drive. -

I have taken the BMW 1 series 1.6i for a drive recently and enjoyed every second, the car drives really well and the build quality is fantastic. After having poor reliability and build quality from both Renaults I have owned over the last couple of years - the new BMW is worth the extra money just for the quality and excellent driving experience. It's not just another hatchback its much more special, a unique design sharing its platform with nothing else. -

What a fantstic car, the BMW 1 really drives well and I think it looks fabulous (2.0 Diesel is my choice), test drive it and see. There are many up-turned bath tubs around, the new Focus is just another of them. If you want a car with radical styling, pedigree and is fabulous to drive then you can't go so far wrong with the BMW 1 series. Being a bit more expensive keeps it exclusive and you will get the extra returned on resale values. The build quality is important to me as I do 100,000 miles plus before returning the car. It does everything I want with complete reliability, even the 5 year servicing package is another example of BMW's commitment to quality and customer service. Don't knock it until you've tried it, you may be in for a surprise. -

Got to say I think the 1 series is monstrous to look at. I don't doubt it handles beautifully as you guys have said, but I can't get past the looks...
I'm so shallow...

Just put my order in for a 116i SE. It is definitely a bit pricey, pushing nearly £20k with sat nav and met. paint, but hey it's a company car, so I haven't got to shell out the pennies. Had a test drive at the dealer and it was great. Smooth ride and a bit of poke for a 1.6.
All of you that reckon it's ugly must have watched too many train spotting films lately. Get rid of those plastic anoraks, open your eyes and see that the 1 series has beautiful, original styling. The old favourite BMW bits are still there along with some new creasing to the lines of the body, making this car truly unique and different to all the normal boring rubbish.
Well done BMW. Can't wait 'till September when I can enjoy many hours of driving pleasure. -

Well i´m just waiting for my 116i Sport this monday, i dove the 120d b4, i was quite impressed, but rather than power, i´m looking for a comfortable hatchback, nice desing and cool looking car. I think the 116i does the job, getting the sport version grants me some nice xtras too. well sure is far better than my retired astra, the other optios was A3 or fiat stilo, ok i´m paying more, but is still a BMW. anyone have a homepage with owners feedback about the car? -

I hate the way the indicators "work". If mine wasnt a company vehicle I'd refuse to put up with it. They are so sensitive that when you want to switch one off you end up indicating in the opposite direction! Apparently Clarkson agrees.
