Between Spain and the North African coast are the Balearic Islands, one of the most popular tourist destinations in the world. If you are interested in beautiful beaches, spectacular scenery, invigorating sunshine, great food, a good choice of accommodation and lively nightlife then the Balearics are the place for you.
The bars and beaches of the Balearic Islands are first-rate but if you look beyond them you will also find quiet, unspoilt regions and some interesting history. There are charming fishing villages and towns, Gothic churches and Ancient ruins as well as picturesque countryside revealing delightful orange and olive groves.
The main island attractions are Majorca (Mallorca), Minorca (Menorca), Ibiza (Eivissa) and Formentera. Other islands include Cabrera. Each has its own distinct character.
The capital of the islands is Palma de Majorca. Majorca is famous for its awe-inspiring coastline featuring rocky outcrops, small coves and wonderful sandy beaches.
Lush green countryside and unspoilt beaches abound at this relatively unspoilt island. With a population of 62,000, 47km long and between 10 and 19km wide, Menorca has an enviable coastline of some 200km. This island also includes some beautiful villages and towns.
As well as a famous centre for clubbing and DJs Ibiza also includes beautiful quiet resorts and villages and spectacular beaches and landscape. The third largest of the group covers about 541 km² and has a population of just over 100,000.
The small island of Formentera is about 90 km² with just over 5,000 inhabitants. It rests only 11 miles from Ibiza. Formentera is famed for its wondrous beaches and tranquillity.
