    Crete - or Κρήτη or Kriti - is the largest of the Greek islands and the fifth largest in the Mediterranean Sea.

    Samaria Gorge

    The biggest gorge in Greece and in Europe, a phenomenal natural phenomenon and one of the major tourist attractions of the island. The 18km long gorge was created by a small river running between the White Mountains (Lefká Óri) and Mount Volakias. Has to be seen from its foothills to be truly appreciated.

    Knossos

    This world famous tourist attraction is the largest Bronze Age site on the island. This was the palace of King Knossos who ruled the Minoan Empire. In Greek legend the Minotaur, a mythical monster, with the head of a bull and the body of a man, was also thought to have lived here in its labyrinth.

    Lato

    Ancient city and rare non-Minoan archaeological site on the island which was founded in 7BC. Provides breathtaking views over the Mirabello Gulf. Many fascinating ruins remain including the remnants of a theatre and an ancient Temple of Apollo.

    Heraklion

    Includes the islands archaeological museum and lots of vibrant nightlife, excellent choice of shops as well as plenty of churches and other sites.

    Chania

    Lots of Venetian history here including impressive Venetian harbour. Includes delightful narrow streets and small hotels and some nice bars.

    Rethymno

    Rethymnon is a lovely town with old section including impressive Venetian castle. Great sandy beach and good combinations of bars, cafes, restaurants.

    Sitia

    Quieter with good beach and lots of interesting cafes and quality hotels.

  • Hot Weather

    Crete lies between the Mediterranean and North Africa and so the climate is mainly temperate. Can be quite humid but is warm all year round. Strangely snow is common on the extremely high mountain ranges and can be seen even during heat waves - although unheard of in the lowland and coastal areas. Temperatures in summer months are often in the low to mid 30s C.
