“Reliable, easy to use mid pro tool”

★★★★☆

written by on 28/08/2013

This tool was purchased as my first hedgetrimmer when beginning a gardening business in 2007. It has performed very well on most hedging tasks for domestic gardens and probably a bit surpassed in the ability to cut old dead hedge wood such as is often seen in public space landscapes. Can 'chainsaw' or eat through quite thick green branches thicker than technically specified. I like the simple blade adjustment system (nylok nuts) but some care is still needed to no overtighten the blades so that they jam; easier that the Stihl type shim setup. I have used the Stihl long blade hedgers too and they are a bit stronger and probably essential for city council type work but not needed for a lot of lighter work. Also the Tanaka THT-210s (now a new model by Hitachi who bought the brand) is lighter, easier to start and a lot cheaper. Have never sharpened the blades but they self sharpen so long as the clearances are set nicely. Have replaced some nuts and bolts, have replaces starter cord have always kept a well greased gearbox and did clean the gearbox once (easy). The handle lockout plastic piece broke about a year ago and is cheaply replaced but i didnt bother, not really necessary and different of the newer model which uses two buttons instead and the handle pivot is a bit sloppy now and could replace this too fairly cheaply but not going to bother. I would definitely recommend this product and am currently buying a Tanaka THT-2520SB with the longer blade. Enjoy

“not for professionals”

★★☆☆☆

written by on 13/11/2012

I bought this model THT2100SB after reading reviews, i bought it to replace Husqvarna 325HD75 for professional use but it is not up to the standard of the husqy, bought it online and i am having difficulty getting spares as no dealers local to me. Firstly it does not cut leylandii as well as husqy, tears and bogs down as engine is too small. The rear handle drags on hedge which means you have to tidy up bits of hedge pulled out by handle. The petrol tank is far too small it only runs for approx 15 mins before fills as when on side it runs dry with half the fuel still in the tank. The fuel cap vent blocks up if used in wet weather which means you have to keep opening the cap to release vacuum. After about 150 hours use the fuel tank developed a crack next to the mounting. A further 20 hours one of the clutch spring broke. i would not buy another Tanaka, the husqy have weak bearings in gearbox but i will go back to husqy next year. i have either owned most makes of hedge cutters over the years or tried them and nothing cuts like a husqy.

have several Tanaka machines in my inventory and most are or have been broken or repaired. Hedge trimmers, gearbox broken. Chainsaw auto oilers do not work and have replaced a few times, same with the gearbox problem on gas trimmer. No more Tanaka for me !

“Light and holds edge well ideal for leylandi hedges....”

Light and holds edge well ideal for leylandi hedges. Other attachments can be fitted eg pole chainsaw, but is quiet heavy.

I think you are getting confused with your models, you cant fit attachments on a THT210.You must be writing about either a TPH2501 or TPH2510 pole hedgecutter.

The Tanaka THT-210 is a good intermediate hedge cutter for the enthusiastic, amateur or the small time professional. However, my true loves come from the Stihl range. These ferocious beauties make the lopper virtually redundant in my garden and do not require frequent sharpening to maintain performance. They sound beautiful and the weight of them makes my arm calves taut and I feel like a man. However, back to the Tanakas, not bad at all. I use them for trimming my delicate buxos.

“I use this model of Tanaka all year round as a...”

I use this model of Tanaka all year round as a professional gardener. This isnt a "once-a-year" tool and the price reflects the very high quality. The blades are made of some superb steel and stay sharp for ever. I have never had any problems at all with the carburation. One down side is that it runs on 25:1 and so on still days you can end up breathing in a bit a 2-stroke smoke. Its light and the backbone of the blade is not as strong as some. My friend broke the back of his and replacement cost £60. Then again he did tend to throw it into the back of the landrover rather than place it in gently. Sadly he had it stolen and replaced it with a different model which he has never liked as much. It is a contractors model due to the price but the quality speaks for itself.

If you run semi-synthetic two stroke oil you can switch to 50:1 ratio, and save your lungs.....as for the bar breaking,no hedge has ever broken it.If you treat your tools like that you will have to pay!
