Good Points: good on fuel, handles well.reliable and hard as nails
Bad Points: turbo is in a small rev range. interior is drab and cheap.
General comments: I had this car off my girlfriends dad as the one I brought initially a 97 d turbo with 67.000 miles set on fire due to a dodgy sound system I phoned ray he said give me £100 and your car and you can have mine a 96 xnd 97,000miles I took it only then did I realize how bad the other was the turbo was leaking shocks had gone and smoked like a chimney enough about that
its a defined drive and you have to get to know it, it was used everyday for work and the more you use it the engine gets better. It had to endure speed humps everyday and floated over them although for the mot I had to have two track rod ends. I never trusted it cornering but one day I was in a bad mood I took it out and hammered it and it just takes corners like nothing even a right angle turning it will glue to the road.
although you have to replace parts if driven hard they come cheap. It needed two front tyres brake pads and I gave it a full service and cambelt change most done by ray not costing a lot but service and pads are very easy to do.
Things to watch out for is cooling fan make sure its working all 3 Peugeots I have owned including an 02 206 have all failed I never figured out what caused any of them the xnd had a manual switch fitted (not standard). Also a fairly loud whistle will be turbo leaking.
All in all its solid the turbo kicks in at 2500 and dies at 5400 its nippy if you manage the turbo with gear change and will cruise at 90 all day with power as your always in the turbo range. I think I owned it just under a year only sold as it had a 30mph crash straight in the rear quarter as I was turning right the Citroen Saxo was a write off he had no insurance and it was partly my fault, id had 1 can and he had four witnesses so I decided to cut my losses I started the car drove it home kicked the dent out and drove it for another 3 months without any problems al that broke was the passenger seat belt mechanism. I gave the car a good battering I admit for the time I had it and I it took the lot and is still on the road today. I found out later that it had already had a smash in the front end and been repaired when I had it so I think that says it all it € s a tough car. I have a bmw 320 now it € s up for sale im getting another 306.

If you keep these cars maintained ie oil, filter, air filter, fuel filter, Coolant, Gear oil you won't have trouble. Lots of cheap parts available in breakers yards.

I bought this car for commuting long distances to work, as the Vauxhall Astra 1.6 petrol we have is very new on a 55 plate and didn't want to max it's miles out. The pug on an N plate cost me £999. 1 lady owner from new, and she was a Police Officer, and really looked after the car. It's just turned 125,000 miles and runs quieter and better than the Astra.

The one I drove had 125,000 miles + but had a fantastic reliable engine. Cost £50 to fill (@93p a litre) with diesel but could turn in 600 miles on a tank. A great practical second car. Did rust a little. Rear doors very stiff (lack of use) and needed plenty of WD40. The heavy 1.9 diesel engine with lack of power steering made parking a task more suited to people with Popeye sized arms. Suspension was 'floaty', can race over any sleeping policeman with little effect, but caused roll in sha ...

I bought the Peugeot 306 over 6 years ago and it was 3 years old when I got it and it had already done 30,000 miles.
I needed a car that was safe, strong, reasonable on diesel, took the kids and their stuff and that could do the milage I needed from it. I travel 135 miles round trip to work every other day and the car has now done 220,000 miles, I reckon that it costs me £12 a day to do my round trip but given the car's age it ain't doing bad.
I have had it serviced every 6000 miles ...
