Good Points: Loyal, loving, playful excellent family or single owner pets, Very few if any breed related health issues.
Bad Points: Can be thieves with food (not just mine I have asked other whippet owners!)
General comments: I never thought I'd have a whippet as a breed. He came to me after being dumped where I worked, I took him home for a weekend 19 months ago. My opinions of whippets have totally changed I am completely hooked on them! He has a superb temperament, he is loving, playful and fine at being left alone. They do not need huge amounts of exercise just a run around a decent sized park every day. They do feel the cold so coats are a must in the winter and they generally hate water. I do let mine off the lead and he is fine, many breeders will say you must not because they are sight hounds. He loves everyone young and old, he lives happily with 3 cats!I don't think they make great guard dogs!If I am truly honest I cannot fault this breed except the thieving of food! (and in our Jimmy's case blister pack tablets!) I am a veterinary nurse and have to be very careful if someone asks to recommend a breed I now always advise a whippet especially in a family as they are not huge dogs like the ever popular labs and retrievers (lovely though they are they can take up a lot of space)
