“A lovely Place”

★★★★☆

written by on 17/12/2013

Just been for lunch and it was lovely .Warm and cosy on a cold winters day. Despite being busy we had a welcoming reception and were looked after throughout our visit .We only had sandwiches on this occasion but the bread was nice and fresh and the fillings tasty. The food being served to other tables looked fresh and appetising.I was surprised at how busy the Restaurant was for a midweek lunchtime, particularly because of the out of the way location. I would definitely go back and look forward to sampling he rest of the menue.

“AVOID LIKE THE PLAGUE”

★☆☆☆☆

written by Jenniferblue on 03/02/2013

My own mistake for giving it a second chance, bad enough the first time, but being fair I returned, truly, truly awful, only giving it one star as the quant setting and surroundings warrant that, but apart from that its a washout, countless staff more interested in texting and talking than serving the customers and seeing to their needs or requests. Then dishing up to the table with 'carefully selected local produce' well if it is whoever is in the kitchen must have a real grudge with the local area to ruin the food that spectacuarly!!! Rubber potatoes, burnt fatty meats and cold vegetables, no cutlery condiments, had to ask for any little thing that should have been obvious. Its a dog friendly pub, and I have no problem with that, it even goes so far as to include 'dog treats' on the main menu I think there must have been a mix up with my order and Rex got my food!......Terrible.

We booked last minute and got an excellent rate of £50 per room with full English Breakfast (the best we have ever had!!!). Room was stunning (Mallard and Teal rooms have HUGE baths), veiws amazing, staff attentive and friendly giving us a choice of rooms on arrival and also letting us choose breakfast time. Stayed for a meal (food gorgeous!) in evening and pub was extremely busy but lovely, cosy atmosphere!! We will definatly be going again!! We believe they have changed management in last year and cant say enough how much we enjoyed it!

“Ruined a really good pub”

★★☆☆☆

written by on 25/02/2012

I've been visiting the Strawberry Duck pub for many years for the good food but since the chef changed a few months ago, the menu has become very limited and the selection and value of the sandwiches at lunch time is particularly awful. We always called into the pub after a long walk and looked forward to the wide choice of good value sandwiches e.g. home cooked ham and beef. Now they serve a small selection of mainly "open sandwiches" which seems to mean an excuse to serve you one slice of bread instead of two! Even the amount of bread you get with soup, which used to be big hearty chunks of bread, has been reduced to two small thin morsels! This pub seems to be turning into a "gastro pub" which is just an excuse to serve smaller portions and charge higher prices! It certainly doesn't seem to be catering for its old clientele. e.g. walkers and cyclists. We certainly won't be hurrying back which is a pity because this used to be one of our favourite pubs.

written by linto78 on 12/01/2012

I went to Strawberry Duck for and we had been before and had no problems. On this occasion though, we sat in the restaurant and were treated to foul, loud language and blaring music coming from the kitchen. My wife having ordered fish and chips (Lasagne un-available) and discovered short black hair in her meal. The bar lady was very apologetic and offered a alternative or refund for the meal and we took the refund. It seemed very unprofessional on their part and I dare to say I wouldn't visit this place again.

“Never Again!”

★★☆☆☆

written by JZIB on 01/01/2012

I appreciate that we landed during what appeared to be the pub's busiest hours (dinner), but even so... After paying a total of £22 for two sandwiches, two 'plates' of chips (for £2.75 each I expected something more substantial than the two teeny weeny saucers served) and "three individual pots of tea" (we got three cups but only one pot), our food arrived SEVENTY mins later...but only after informing the 2nd waitress of its being late. The 1st one, a foreign lady, ignored our 'where is our meal?' request, or so it seemed. She also didn't bring back the pot of tea when I asked her to refill it with boiling water, since it hardly covered the three cups. So no, I won't be going back.

“Lovely Evening at the Strawbury Duck”

★★★★★

written by on 28/08/2011

First time, very impessed, food outstanding for pub food. Like the way local produce is used. Most enjoyable evening, staff very friendly, no long waits in between courses. Excellent and first class. We were introduced to the Strawbury Duck by friends who go at lunch time. Six of us dined last night. Keep up the good work it is worth travelling from Eccles, Manchester. The word will be spread what a nice place to visit. Hope to go again in the not too distant future and take new people. I had the pate, delicious, steak beef burger, excellent, the beef was from either Galloway or Aberdeen, sticky toffee pudding to finish. Black pudding, fish pie were chosen by 3 people, Gammon succulent, reared by the owners and a sirloin steak was chosen. A good night was had by all.

“Excellent food and surroundings”

★★★★★

written by on 26/07/2011

My partner and I went here last night for a meal and the food was so great that I felt compelled to write a review. Upon arrival we were greeted with a warm welcome from the guys behind the bar and given the choice of tables to suit our 'mood'. There a number of rooms to choose from so you can retire to the snug area or eat in the more lively lounge area which we did. There is an amble choice of food on the menu as well as the specials board and the local providence of the food is proudly boasted on the menu. The pork is gathered from their own pigs and other meats such as birds are shot in the local estates. We ate the chipolata sausages and mushrooms to start followed by steak and ale pie and fish pie for mains. The mains especially were fantastic and great value at under £10 each. Probably in the top 3 pies we have ever eaten! The service was excellent too and the young lady who looked after us was attentive but not invasive which is just how we like it. In summary this is an excellent food venue in a lovely area. We can't wait to go up there in the winter when the fire is roaring!

★☆☆☆☆

written by on 29/04/2011

We visited The Strawberry Duck 8 months ago and were disappointed then. I ordered Potted Duck expecting either traditional potted meat or a confit but instead was served plain strips of duck in a pot. It was literally 'potted duck' and also a joke. Other things were wrong with meal that day, too much potato and not enough filling in the fish pie for example and nothing that was outstanding. We did not want to review the pub negatively then, wanting to give it a chance as a new business in the village. We gave it a wide berth instead. However, we decided to give it another go yesterday for a simple mid week evening tea. It was not busy. The burger my husband ordered was tiny and over cooked. The fish pie was much smaller than last time (a very small pot of food coupled with a tiny pot of overcooked shrivelled peas, it was not filling for £10) and dried out on top. It was quite bland with little seasoning and even less fish (I could only find a few flakes of salmon). My son ordered sausages and mash. The sausages were chewy-hard having obviously been cooked previously and now just micro-waved. In fact, it seemed most of the food had been pre-cooked then micro-waved for us. Also, all three tables eating in the bar area asked for ketchup and all were denied as they had not received an order yet (a 10 minute trip to the local shop for the sake of customer service would not have hurt). When I complained at the end of the meal, there was not much of an apology or explanation and one waitress became rather defensive saying it was not the restaurants fault the order of ketchup had failed to come. It was a horribly limp and pathetic meal and we felt we should have stayed at home for a better one. It is a terrible shame because the decor is now fabulous, the location is wonderful and this pub should be packed every night and would be if they ensured the food was top quality, every time. We will never visit for food again.

The strawbury duck serves what I like to describe as 'Posh Pub Food'. The portions are big enough for a large Elk to go home feeling full and the food is more tasty than megan fox covered in Chocolate. There is a predominant theme of local producers to the menu, especially there pork which they breed themselves(Which came as little of a surprise),.the gammon was massive and probably the tastiest ive ever had! The most expensive meal on the menu is a rump steak £16.00, which I will be going to try just as soon as I locate someone who's willing to pay for it...

A few minor down points, you have to buy your drinks at the bar, not what you expect when you pay this much for a meal. And there were a few too many kids there for my liking. It's also pretty difficult to find if you don't know where you are going, but all in all it's very nice. definatly be back!

Fantastic pub, the bad comments make me laugh! I am a local chef and know Adam and matt (the owners), they rear their own pigs, use the best suppliers locally and I can honestly say, they make everything from scratch! (mushy peas- marrowfat peas are home made)! The problem with the pub is how busy it gets at the weekend during the day- Let's be honest the pub has only been open 6 months and is packed out- obviously people need to chill out!!! For any potential visoitor- remember only upset customers write reviews.....not the other 1,300 customers a week they are doing up there!!! I say thank god the strawbury duck is back, alive and kicking!!! Great cask ales, great simple pub food with a twist. well done lads.

We had wonderful Mother's Day lunch for 10 of us (&4young children). Staff were very accomodating and keen to help with high chairs, extra plates for children, sauces etc. Food was delicious, well priced and served quickly (even on one of their busiest days of the year). We loved the atmosphere and setting and had previously enjoyed a lovely walk around the reservoir, before sitting down to a delicious lunch. We'll be back!

written by omegamorgan on 24/03/2011

Overpriced, Cheese and Onion Pie,chips and Mushy (tinned) peas...£8.95
There was a 35 + minute wait for the food, with only one couple in before us....and was served ...warm.
The 'Pie' was huge, far too much pastry, which was mediocure. The cheese and onion filling was quite tasty....the Mushy peas were tinned and not hot....The chips were greasey, soggy and overcooked....
The Strawberry duck used to be renowned for it's Roast Beef Bagettes...they are no more.... Bye Bye Strawberry Duck.... you won't be seeing us again.

written by cathyt63 on 14/03/2011

After reading the mixed reviews I was a little hesitant about going but liked the location so decided to give it a try. It was a busy Sunday afternoon about 4pm. We didn't have to wait for a table and the food was served promptly by very pleasant staff. The bar staff were also very friendly, which was not what I expected from the reviews. The Sunday roast was the best I have had at any pub anywhere around the Bolton area, nice pink beef with not over cooked veg with a huge yorksire pud- yum! The atmosphere was buzzing and we had our little Cavapoo with us sat under the table and we were made to feel most welcome. I would definitely return and definitely recommend this pub. It reminds me of a typical walker's pub with good wholesome food that you would expect to get in The Lakes. Fab position with great walks nearby. So if you like walking, maybe are looking for somewhere that's dog friendly, like an old fashioned pub atmosphere with good pub/gastro food this is the place for you. The only thing I didn't like was the bread and butter pudding. It was soggy on top and too stodgy. Please tell the chef it should be crispy on the top, ( I am a bit of a pudding expert and make a mean one myself) with more fruit and a lot lighter. The sticky toffee pudding was excellent.

Lovely place, nice staff. I visited with my partner and some friends for food and drinks. My boyfriend ordered one of the most expensive things on the menu (mutton with bubble and squeak) and was utterly disappointed.
The portion was half the size of the rest of ours, didn't come wth any veg, just a small amount of unseasoned mashed potato, which was supposed to be the bubble and squeak (no cabbage?!), and quite frankly we could have made it better ourselves, for a fraction of the cost.
However, despite this it was a lovely place and we will probably return, but certainly not order the same!

The food is excellent and generally the staff are very helpful. Food takes a while, but fair enough when it's cooked fresh and turns up to delicious. Lovely atmosphere and visits are always thoroughly enjoyable. As locals we're proud of the Strawbury Duck and pleased with what the new owners have done.
