The Tom Tom One sat nav is probably the most sought after GPS unit available from TomTom. Having generated a number of alternate versions (including the Tom Tom One v4 and Tom Tom One XL), and also available in UK and European mapping alternatives, this in car GPS is a regular in best seller lists.

I use this sat nav about 3 times a month on average, mostly in the summer. It is very handy and I would not be without a sat nav now. Easy to use with clear screen. Never let me down. However I do think it was rather expensive for a basic model. Screen is a bit small. Also I have had problems downloading maps. Finally the battery does not seem to hold its charge very long at all. I have to run it from the power source in the car and within less than 24 hours it is dead, even after a long... (read more)

This review isn't about the TomTom One device itself, which I have to say is a great piece of kit, rather it is about the map updating service offered by TomTom. I own a TomTom One, and although having purchased previous maps/updates the map within device is currently not up to date. When I connect to TomTom Home software, I am advised that new maps are avilable to purchase at a cost of £19.80 for a full year (4 updates). However, in order to obtain these updates I must first pay £19.80 to... (read more)

I bought a TT Go 300 about two years ago ~ I am a technophobe but even I found the instructions simple . I use the TT every working day to deliver cars all over the UK and in 99% of the cases I am at the doorstep , the other 1% gets me to within certainly 50 yards . The company I work for pays for updates even though the machine is mine .

I have no experience of other makes but I would be more...

Clear screen when it works, good navigation but in my experience the sound stopped working after 6 months, battery lasts about four minutes when using as standalone. unhelpful website and back-up. Not very impressed with the customer service. I won't be buying another Tom Tom and going back to something we used for over 3000 years called "a map".
Also in my opinion the design is not very good, you put the SD card in the bottom and the amount of times it's fell out (i have lost 5) so I have...

A good product idea, let down by implementation. You need to reprogramme (almost) everything if, like me, you are an irregular user becuase of the poor battery life. 'Shortest' routes are a joke on land - you can't drive across a field! It desperately needs a better way of installation in the car that comes as standard, and doesn't require permanent disfiguration to the dashboard. (read more)

In my experience, at unexpected moments the SatNav holder disconnects itself from the windscreen, and the TomTom suddenly falls onto your lap, or if you are unlucky, into the driver's footwell, which is very dangerous when you are driving at speed. Also, the Tom Tom keeps directing me to go over level crossings, where I get stuck in a queue of traffic, sometimes for 20 minutes, waiting for the train to pass. It would have been quicker if the Tom Tom had programmed a route for me which... (read more)

Have just bought a TomTom One prior to going on a UK touring holiday and have turned into a SatNav bore overnight. If you haven't used SatNav before then take it from me that it's amazing. It's particularly useful when either arriving at or departing from an area with which you're not familiar. Saves time and more importantly money. The TomTom One I've got is only for UK use, and may not have all the bells and whistles of more expensive models. But for the price it's a must-have. It will... (read more)

I've only had my TomTom One V3 for about a month. I have a Garmin Vista for walking/car but it has no voice and I had been in cars with Tom Toms and thought they seemed straightforward.
In reality the inability to pre-load routes is a bit of a nuisance. You need to set up favourites the night before leaving to ensure it goes on the route you want. Then having to set up in the car before leaving can take more time than you want.
Post codes seem to be the best method of entry. So you need to...

I recently went from Chicago to Dallas to Memphis and back to Chicago in my car. I spent at least half of the trip with " No Satellite" reception. It generally does a good job storing trip details but once it loses satellite you have to go to the summary page which is not as reassuring and you lose your position/distance/times etc.. What a disappointment. My Tom Tom One is now fit for the bin after just over a year's use. It's been temperamental, not charging properly, whilst out on the road. This results in the battery being so low that the unit won't fire up at all. I've changed the cable to no avail. I've been told it's a fault within the machine that is not rectifiable. This appears to be overly common with the Tom Tom one, according to what I've read on the internet. Buyer beware. (read more)

The Tom Tom One is good provided that you set it to take the quickest route not the shortest. I downloaded 50 voices from the internet onto it and they work fine. I had an early Tom Tom sat nav and liked the format, but they didn't offer updates after a year, so decided to upgrade. The new features are excellent, the dynamic routing is quick, the graphics are easy on the eye, and the start up time is amazing. I found this review unhelpful because... I find it hard to believe that if the UK Tomtom One units were all that bad, there would be no positive user reviews.
