I took my car to Smith Knight Fay in Stockport because the offside indicators were staying on. I had replaced a bulb for the rear indicator and it worked fine but the indicators were staying on. Having been quoted £48.88 for a diagnostic the garage then called me to say that they needed to replace the whole light unit taking the cost up to £84.66. I took their word for it and had the work done.

I went to pick up my car and noticed that the lights were still faulty, they were all staying on and the indicators didn't flash when indicating but just stayed on, so before I got out of their car park I took it back. After asking them to take the car back in for checking several times they reluctantly agreed and immediately sent it back out claiming there was nothing wrong. So I demonstrated to one of the technicians. He commented that they hadn't picked that up?! They then patronised me saying that they have over 20 years experience and it is definitely the light unit. I asked them to check the alarm as it isn't a standard VW alarm and that they should fault test before ripping out a unit and replacing it. THey reluctantly agreed after 30 minutes of heated discussion.

Hey presto the indicators work, I self diagnosed the problem and as soon as they did as asked the car was working (albeit without the remote for the alarm). I asked for my money back as the unit is fine, they refused.

SO I took the 'faulty' unit to an electrican and had him test the circuitry and low and behold the whole unit is fine. I went back to the garage and the head of service insisted that his technicians diagnosis was right. I asked again if they had fault tested and he admitted they hadn't and were working on previous experience. I explained that I DID have it tested and it works.

Upon insisting that they replace the old unit and give me my money back I eventually (after several hours of debate) got HALF my money back as they insisted that the diagnostic was fine. IT WAS ME WHO DIAGNOSED THE PROBLEM.

I have since asked for the General Manager several times only to be told that he doesn't take calls?!?! I have written to them and no response. Everytime I call I get the Head of Service (Paul someone or other).

Note: My light unit is still working (surprise surprise)

in my case the parts didn't need replacing at all. Their customer service is patronising and they seem to team up so it's two against one. I love VW's and have always found them to be good cars but this garage gave me a terrible service.

I took my VW Golf to Smith Knight Fay 2 years ago for a service when I first moved into the area. Disappointed to receive the kind of poor service I would expect from a smaller garage. I took it back to get all the flashing warning & STOP! And service me now lights on the dash extinguished however a whole day they couldn't find anything wrong with it and couldn't turn the lights off. Brilliant.
They told me that the 2nd best engineer in VW had looked at it and couldn't find the fault. When I su ...

My wife bought an Audi A3 from Smith Knight Fay a couple of years ago. It was a surprise when we collected the car to discover that it didn't have the options we expected. The car we test drove had cup holders and cargo nets so as these aren't individual options we just assumed they would be standard. When we went through the options with the sales person we didn't realise that our choice of stereo turned the cup holder into a coin tray and that not having a ski hatch deleted the cargo nets.

I have had 3 Volkswagen Golf's (Although everytime I vow I will not buy another!!) yesterday I took my car in to the Smith Knight Fay Car Dealers in Stockport as my car kept on stopping for no apparent reason! Although I had booked my car in to be looked at I had to wait over an hour to hand my keys in. I was re assured that the service guy would call me (about dinnertime) to let me know how the car was... naturally no call came! When I turned up to collect my car it was out on a test drive... t ...
