Just spent three weeks in USA - Route 66 and National and State Parks - 35 dollar transactions worked fine. But beware, at some gas (petrol) stations the card payment was refused by the keypad machine and I had to resort to a bank credit card, on which I have had to pay 'non-sterling transaction fees' for each expenditure and presumably worse exchange rates. I had to top-up my card en-route, somewhere in Utah, via my smartphone, and the system worked perfectly. Lesson : Need to take a... (read more)

Got a euro currency card three years ago and opened a currency transfer account last year. The card is easy to use, has never let me down (touch wood) and offers pretty good value for money - given that cash withdrawals from cash dispensers are free. The currency transfer service works a treat and - compared with my bank - is extremely cheap. Very happy with both services. Two small things : 1 - new cards take a bit longer to arrive than claimed in the publicity - give yourself plenty of... (read more)

This is a warning to those like myself who have a caxton FX mastercard which they haven't used for a while. I had asked for mine's to be blocked last April as I wasn't going to use it for a year. I recently asked for it to be re-activated. Something was said about needing to switch to a Visa version of the card by choosing tht option after I logged in to my account - but no such option was there and the FAQs implied I could carry on using my card. It was only because I checked a second time... (read more)

We’re sorry to hear that the experience of switching your currency card from Mastercard to Visa was not satisfactory. Whilst the majority of customers were given the option to switch their cards by logging into their account, cards with a ‘blocked’ status were not given this option for compliance and security reasons. As a fully regulated company, we take security very seriously and therefore have to be prudent in regulating the processes we put in place.
Being an online company, the majority of customer communication is conducted via email. We sent a succession of emails warning customers of the change and reminding them that their MasterCard would be closed. We sincerely apologise for instances like this, where our communications did not find their way to valued customers and the option to opt in was, due to circumstance, unavailable.
Please be assured that the new Visa product will continue to offer the value, security and convenience that initially attracted you to Caxton FX.

I've used the currency cards for a couple of years, they are great in restaurants, shops and ATM's, what's more, they help me budget for the coming holiday by allowing me add Euro's as and when I can afford to. This also means that the exchange rate is a bit less important because I can take the rough with the smooth as far as that goes. The money transfer service is also very good - a competitive rate, no charges and a fast and safe payment. What more could I ask? (read more)

We have used the Caxton card for a few years now and have no complaints. It is the easiest and fastest way to get euros etc for holidays. It also seems to have the best exchange rate so you get more for your money! To be able to use it in restaurants and shops as well as getting cash out of cash machines means you don't need to remember any other card to go away. As it is internet based it means you can top up the card any time you are away. Would really recommend it!! Thanks (read more)

his is such a convenient pre-paid credit card! I can check my balance and expenditure on line, which helps with the holiday budget. Also, as my card is only used once in a while it very easy to obtain a pin reminder. I have had to make a few phone-calls to customer services, and each time the staff have been very efficient. I no longer use my Travelex card. This is cheaper and better. You can use this to withdraw cash - or spend in shops - without squandering money on bank charges. (read more)

When we got married in the US we recommended the card to all our guests and they loved it. But there are a handful of small problems we've encountered that could have resulted in disaster. Thanks for your review; we’re sorry to hear that your experience wasn’t without problems. Regarding your first point, we appreciate the process can be frustrating when the addresses you provide does not match the address the bank has for you. Unfortunately, this is a security measure that we cannot avoid or change. We welcome addresses of all types, including the weird and wonderful, but they do have to matchup.
Referring to your second point, we apologize for the trouble with the card being locked and the knock on effect it had. We do recommend that you take more than one form of payment when travelling, to allow time for a resolution if there is an unforeseen issue with the card. That being said, it is obvious that this information was not clear for you to see when you applied for a card. We will take your comments on board and make sure advice on a second payment method is clear to see on the website.
Thank you again for your feedback.

Hi. We’re very sorry to hear that you had a bad experience with our card. We are constantly working with Visa to increase the number of stores where the card is accepted and we’re pleased to say that we have solved the problems with acceptance at Wal-Mart. We are surprised that the card didn’t work at so many other retailers that you’ve listed and are looking into it.
Regarding the charge on withdrawals from ATMs, Caxton FX does not charge a fee for overseas ATM withdrawals. When you use an ATM overseas, the ATM owner may charge you a fee. This is not Caxton FX charging you, it's the ATM owner. A large number of banks in the US will charge, but they normally inform you of this before letting you proceed. Unfortunately, if the ATM owner chooses to charge for a withdrawal, there is nothing we can do to prevent or refund this charge as it is not levied by Caxton FX. I hope that makes things a little clearer.

I’ve had the same issue with Caxton before, but I have been informed that they cannot guarantee acceptance of their card as it is ultimately down to the merchant.
If you are using your card over the counter, it will ask you if it’s a credit or debit account. Make sure you select the credit option otherwise your card will not work. I wasn’t always made aware of this as sometimes the shop assistant won’t ask and simply selects the debit option for you.
My card also didn’t work in Walmart last year so I rang Caxton before I travelled to the US again and apparently the whole Walmart issue has been resolved. I did use my card there last week and it worked perfectly fine.

Hi,
Thanks for your reply I did select credit not debit , but still no joy, if it had just been one outlet that refused I would not have been so annoyed as it can happen, but it happened in several outlets,
I am glad that you had no problems though as its very frustrating and embarrasing to have your card declined.

I've had the same problem with my Caxton card when I went to Florida, I used my card over the counter and it declined, so I rang Caxton and one of their customer service representatives told me I need to select credit not debit when asked what sort of card I am using. So I tried again and it worked perfectly fine.
My daughter is in America right now and her card is working perfectly fine. I rang Caxton before her holiday as I was worried her card would not work but they assured me that all the glitches that happened last time had been fixed.

Totally agree. They've let me down terribly. Card doen't work in so many places, terrible customer service and card now blocked. A disgrace.

Hi anniecooney,
We're sorry to hear about your experience with our card. We are constantly working with Visa to increase the amount of outlets that accept our card and have recently fixed the problems with card acceptance at Walmart.
Regarding ATM charges, when you use an ATM overseas, the ATM owner may charge you a fee. Hope that makes things a little clearer.

The whole point of my comment is that I incurred ATM charges because I could not use my Caxton card , I am we'll aware ATM charge for withdrawals but if my card is being refused in a store then I can either use my bank card and be charged or withdraw money from my Caxton card at an ATM and still be charged , how exactly am I supposed to buy anything? The whole point of having the card is that it is advertised as bring widely acceptable in the USA and reduces bank charges . I am still out of pocket through no fault on my own by putting money on your card, your reply is just standard corporate waffle declining to accept any responsibility . Caxton Customer service is non existent.

Pros : • Easy to load online or phone • Equivalent euro balance is displayed before you load • Free ATM withdrawal outside the UK (Euro currency countries only !) • Secure • VISA reliability • No monthly charges Cons : • None really except that they could be more competitive with exchange rates. • Poor customer service attitude over the telephone. After reading the reviews of travelmoney cards generally, I settled for the Caxton FX eurotraveller and I was not... (read more)

Did you find that a lot of ATMs charge in Europe? Can you use it at any ATM?
