Good Points: Price. Specification. Size and weight.
Bad Points: Carry case and accessories currently out of stock.
General comments: I bought the Matsui PL-617 portable DVD player from Curry's in Mid December 2005 for £72. The price and the high specification (Dolby Digital Sound) I found hard to beat. I asked if this unit would play DVDR, but no-one seemed to know. I brought some DVD+R from home, and asked the salesman if he could try them in the display model, to which he agreed, and to my satisfaction, the three different brands played.
After the purchase, with a three year warranty for £10, I took it home and tried the Multi region hack I found on web. (Press "SETUP" on the remote then press "NEXT" on the remote, then "PREVIOUS" then "NEXT" and then "PREVIOUS" again. A number "2" will appear in the language box in the top right corner.
Next, use the left and right navigation buttons on the remote to skip through all the different regions available until you get to "255", which means "Multi Region". Then press "Enter".
Press "SETUP" again on the remote to get rid of the region selection, then scroll down and exit setup). This worked first time, and I now have a portable multi region DVD player which plays DVDR for £72.
