Good Points: This fridge is very nice to look at, very stylish.

Bad Points: It seems to be poorly made.

General comments: I had my Smeg FAB 28 Retro delivered this afternoon and I only WISH I had known about these reviews prior to buying it. Basically I spent the best part of an hour trying to carefully force (you can tell this is going to end in tragedy when I have to use the word "force") the plastic door shelves into place. They were so tight I was convinced that I was going to damage the fridge door so I tried all sorts of things to get them to fit. I managed to crack two of them and one of them still won't fit even though it's cracked! Poor design and the novelty of having a new fridge delivered has well and truly worn off already. I've emailed customer services but I'm not expecting anything to be done quickly, judging by the other reviews on this page. I'm really fed up now. Wish I'd spent the money on something else.

Glass Shelves have what I would call poor design, and the plastic holding them in place breaks easily. The door compartments shatter and break very easily. Freezer compartment freezes quicker than any fridge/freezer I have ever had.

My experience of my Smeg FAB 28 retro is the same as all the other reviewers. Within a year the rubber seal on the door broke. The entire door had to be replaced. We have had to replace the plastic bottle holders and the other containers attached to the door. The freezer door at the top never closes properly. We have also replaced it numerous times as the fragile 'pin- type' fasteners snap off. All these replacement parts are expensive. Also as the freezer door is not designed to close too tight ...

I have a recommendation to all these people who are disappointed with Smeg... Get total style and total substance with Fisher Paykel. You simply can't go wrong!

This is a cheap fridge in an expensive overcoat. I would not recommend that you buy this product!

The storage capacity is not great and quality of interior fittings (shelves, bottle holder etc) is poor. We have had to replace just about everything in first 3 years. A case of design over substance as far as we are concerned, would not buy another one.

I will never buy a Smeg fridge again, 6 months of problems. I am now on my 4th new fridge. If you buy one check the door seal at the top. This went on 3 of my fridges to date. Also I have problems with the fan ,light ,damage to the frame. I could go on for hours about the problems I have had.

I have had my fab 28 fridge for just over 6 years and i have had to purchase 6 ice box doors as they only last approximately 1 year. Smeg refuse to admit that this is a design fault. To add insult to injury, the doors are nearly £90 to buy. disgusting service for an expensive cheap quality product. never again would i purchase another smeg product. does anyone know where i can find a cheaper door? it used to be just under £50 but it has doubled.

I DO NOT RECOMMEND BUYING THIS FRIDGE!! Talk about style over substance! Smeg have now told me to pursue the retailer for a refund or replacement, after only 18 months of owning what i believed was a quality product!

I have had problems ever since we bought our FAB 28 fridge. The Freezer door gave way after about 1 year. I think everyone that has one of these has replaced the door. But my biggest issue at present is that the plastic insert on the back of the main door is very cheap. The lugs which hold the bottle carriers perish after 3 years and now I cannot use them. The repair solution from Smeg is to order a whole new door at a cost of £266.40. Outrageous! Don't buy this Italian rubbish. Nic ...

I have had a similar experience to the other reviewers. Within a year the railings above the door shelves had broken on my Smeg FAB 28 Retro fridge freezer, meaning now that every time I open the fridge door any bottles in the door fall out - I have broken a lot of bottles of wine this way, and spilt a lot of milk. Also, the freezer door broke off in under a year, and I gave up altogether with the Smeg customer service. We paid for a new freezer door which never arrived (£75), and we were ...

I bought this Smeg FAB 28 Retro fridge freezer about three years ago and it has been a piece of garbage. The Ice box door has broken off, just after the ice box handle snapped away. The bottle holders have all now snapped off, the ice box leaks water (lots of it) all over the food and fills the salad tray up! The shelve plastic retainers are all now starting to crack - We have a proper fridge freezer in the garage which we now use as the main fridge and the Smeg just keeps our milk cool - spend ...

Keep away from Smeg at all costs.A month or so after I took delivery, the door moulding was discovered to be misshapen, causing the door not to close properly. The door was changed, but the new door persistently would not close either so had to be changed. Smeg messed me around so much - didn't ring me back for so long that they closed their file saying it had been too long! The second replacement door was not right either as there was a paint fault. After months and years of chasing them to rep ...

Bought the stylish Smeg FAB28 Retro fridge about 2 years ago and it is absolute garbage! Nice on the outside but what goes on inside is nobodys business! The icebox door seal allows water to drip all over food below. We resorted to placing a rolled up tea towel on top shelf...very impressive! Bottle trays broke after a few weeks and icebox door handle has now broken off completely after having to be superglued about a year ago...price of new icebox door??...£90...sweet! Do not be fooled by ...

A triumph of style over substance. We bought our SMEG FAB 28 Retro fridge freezer about three years ago. After 13 months we had a problem with the thermostat/coolant system; There was a blockage in the pipes that circulate the coolant fluid. That was fixed, then the shelves gave up the ghost. Clearly the Baby Bells were too heavy! The door seal doesn't seal the fridge compartment. This means that even with the thermostat on its lowest setting, you cannot keep items at a cool safe temperature. We ...

My first SMEG FAB 28 Retro fridge freezer dripped condensation over food. The door didn't shut properly. The light stayed on and the fan stayed off when the door was shut. Several visits later the fridge was replaced with a new one. This one has had three new doors, all developing faults as the first. Customer service is awful, with long waits on the phone. They expect you to take a full day off work, as they will not give you a time until the day itself. They have agreed a free upgrade to a FAB ...

I had similar problems to others with my Smeg FAB 28 fridge freezer. Several of the shelves in the door have shattered and broken. When I contacted Smeg, they told me that the items I was storing in the fridge door were too big, i.e. a 4 pint container of milk would cause damage, and instead I should have 4 single pints of milk!! It seems to me that the plastic they use shatters easily/is very brittle - no good in a fridge. Also there is now rust appearing on the inside of the door. I first ...

I bought my SMEG FAB28 Retro Fridge on Ebay, and was not concerned to learn that 'several bottle shelves were missing, but easily available from SMEG'. Indeed they are, and at an astonishing price! They charge £23 for a piece of plastic (the shelf), the front lip of which is so low that you also need a metal bar guard, which is £29.70, and possibly another piece of plastic guard to stop the bottles falling over, at a mere £14.66. So each shelf costs £73.36! A replacem ...

We had to Tip our Smeg FAB 28 Retro Fridge Freezer after only 2 and a half years (after spending hundreds of pounds on repairs, and now the cooker parts are failing). Smeg service is useless. SMEG is absolute rubbish. SPREAD THE WORD.
