There is someting about this Smeg FAB fridge that allows you to forgive it almost anything... Mine is over 4 years old and the freezer door broke about 2 years ago (expensive to replace)so we just sealed it up and don't use it. Now the temperature keeps fluctuating and freezing everything in the fridge. Obviously mine has lasted better than some others but the interior really is no better than a cheap product. That said, I am sentimentally attached to it, it makes the kitchen a better place and despite all its faults I would probably buy another one!

Purchased the Smeg Fab 28 just over 4 years ago. It was a big, expensive mistake, and we didn't even pay close to the full price, having purchased from an internet retailer. The seal on the door went just before the guarantee, and this was repaired twice (reasonably successfully after having a whole new door fitted). We have the same problem others have with the icebox dripping. The seal on this is now perished, and the icebox door is now broken. The light inside the fridge stays on even wh ...

After lots of research, shocked by the problems people have had with Smeg fridges, basically falling apart. I feel sorry for you all, but thanks for the warning having almost bought one.
Looking for Retro fridges then try these manufacturers first
Baumatic- 2 years parts and labour and 5 year parts guarantee
Gorenje- 5 year parts and labour guarantee
    Lec-?
All the above much cheaper than Smeg.
    Good luck
Have ordered Baumatic myself so fingers crossed

I find the Smeg FAB retro to be very cheaply built.

Taking all into account - I am glad I bought this fridge and have had 10 years good use out of it. I am however now looking to replace it with something German!

Presumably most people who buy one of these Smeg FAB 28 Retro fridges are buying it because it looks good - I did and what a fool I was. I've had it for about six years now and every time I open it, I wish I hadn't bothered buying it. The inside of the door is virtually shelf-free now as one by one, they've all broken including in a couple of instances, the actual bits of plastic on the door that hold them on so no point in replacing the shelves as there's nothing to hang 'em on! The freeze ...

Loved the look of our new Smeg FAB 28 Retro but in no time at all it was clear that this was a case of style over substance. Door on ice box broke, compartments on door broke, door fails to shut and now glass shelfs have broken! Ironically it no longer even looks good as after only a year rust started bubbling up on both sides. It looks 60 years old and I don't mean in a stylish way! I would go out of my way to advise anyone not to make the mistake of buying one, although if someone really upse ...

Please don't waste your money - I loved the idea of having a Smeg, we saved hard for it and it looks great but 1 year on we're replacing it with something which is better made (and half the price). A real shame we wasted our money. I read these review and still got one. More fool me.

Not recommended....mines utter rubbish. Ice box drips water all over the food, plastic door containers broke with the littlest of weight, door seal doesn't work (2 already fitted). Utter utter rubbish.

I love the Smeg FAB 28 fridge I bought, but I can understand some of the other reviews. They are not the best quality, no doubt, but it's important to remember what it is!
It's an Italian manufacturer, and it looks great, like an Alfa. It'll never be built like an Audi or Merc, but it's got more style in its little toe than lets say an AEG fridge.
Mine arrived about 3 weeks ago and I got a decent price on it. I am happy with the fact it keeps my food cold or frozen, and my mates and family all c ...

I had my Smeg FAB 28 Retro delivered this afternoon and I only WISH I had known about these reviews prior to buying it. Basically I spent the best part of an hour trying to carefully force (you can tell this is going to end in tragedy when I have to use the word "force") the plastic door shelves into place. They were so tight I was convinced that I was going to damage the fridge door so I tried all sorts of things to get them to fit. I managed to crack two of them and one of them still won't fit ...

Glass Shelves have what I would call poor design, and the plastic holding them in place breaks easily.

The door compartments shatter and break very easily.

Freezer compartment freezes quicker than any fridge/freezer I have ever had.

My experience of my Smeg FAB 28 retro is the same as all the other reviewers. Within a year the rubber seal on the door broke. The entire door had to be replaced. We have had to replace the plastic bottle holders and the other containers attached to the door. The freezer door at the top never closes properly. We have also replaced it numerous times as the fragile 'pin- type' fasteners snap off. All these replacement parts are expensive. Also as the freezer door is not designed to close too tight ...

I have a recommendation to all these people who are disappointed with Smeg... Get total style and total substance with Fisher Paykel. You simply can't go wrong!

The storage capacity is not great and quality of interior fittings (shelves, bottle holder etc) is poor. We have had to replace just about everything in first 3 years. A case of design over substance as far as we are concerned, would not buy another one.

I will never buy a Smeg fridge again, 6 months of problems. I am now on my 4th new fridge. If you buy one check the door seal at the top. This went on 3 of my fridges to date. Also I have problems with the fan ,light ,damage to the frame.
I could go on for hours about the problems I have had.

I have had my fab 28 fridge for just over 6 years and i have had to purchase 6 ice box doors as they only last approximately 1 year. Smeg refuse to admit that this is a design fault. To add insult to injury, the doors are nearly £90 to buy. disgusting service for an expensive cheap quality product. never again would i purchase another smeg product. does anyone know where i can find a cheaper door? it used to be just under £50 but it has doubled.

I DO NOT RECOMMEND BUYING THIS FRIDGE!! Talk about style over substance!
Smeg have now told me to pursue the retailer for a refund or replacement, after only 18 months of owning what i believed was a quality product!
