I've had my red Smeg fridge freezer for about 7 years now without any real problems. Yes, you do have to regularly defrost the freezer section or it gets really iced up.I think one of the shelves broke when I was cleaning it but no hassle to replace it. I'm thinking about replacing the red fridge with a cream one but as there's still a few years' wear left in it, I'll sell the red one for a couple of hundred quid. Because of all the bad press the Smeg retro fridges get, I have looked around... (read more)

I was seduced by how this fridge looked - lovely bright colour and sensuous curves. But now it needs constant defrosting no matter what setting you have it on, all the door trays and salad trays are cracked and broken. It's rubbish. Definitely style over substances. I thought Smeg was a top brand but I won't be buying another of their products. (read more)

Great retro looking fridge, initially took a few weeks to get the SMEG levelled up properly but then had no problems at all until 6 months ago when the internal light started to flicker (more off than on) whenever the fridge door was opened so i changed the bulb over which has proved to be a big mistake has it hasn't worked since, this does become a problem at night when the kitchen lights are off & we just want to grab a drink out of the fridge but i am going to have another go at replacing... Purchased this as I always wanted one in lime green had it two months the door on the fridge the seal at the top was coming apart. Had it replaced they said my kitchen floor was not level. New door fitted I have left it while the same thing happening but the seal has come away a lot making the fridge at the back wet with the warm air getting in leading to leaking water on the floor at the back. Rang again. I need a new door they say my kitchen floor is not level. Never had this problem with... (read more)

If only I had read these reviews first! STYLE...STYLE...STYLE, but there it ends. In particular the quality of all plastic components/fittings (not under guarantee. Surprise!) is terrible. All drawers, door racks etc in fridge & freezer compartments have cracked/shattered/broken. We have had it around 5 years. The trouble began almost immediately. I have to defrost it regularly I would never buy another as they are rubbish. It was cheap enough at the time I think..and my wife loves it. which brings me on to this point: it is still working 6 years on..and does keep stuff cold..so that is all I can say for it. Without question our worst purchase EVER! The first one was delivered with a faulty seal and was replaced after a week. The second lasted two whole months before the freezer door tab broke and yes, the seal also failed to seal the fridge properly. The freezer compartment drips water on to the food beneath, and the light has a will all of it's own.
I know it may look good, and everybody assumes SMEG is a great make - but no, just because it's expensive does not mean that this is good... (read more)

Had mine 4 years . when still under guarantee compressor broke. had it repaired. last november had to have whole new door replaced as it wasn't closing properly and temperature fluctuated, sometimes inside was room temperature or it was freezing food and constantly dripping wate from ice box. engineer told me it was common practice and that hed most probably be back as it would happen again. had to wait 9 weeks for new door. My wife wanted a SMEG FAB fridge a few years ago. Nothing but trouble from the outset. I have a fix for broken door shelves. Inevitably the lugs in the door that support the clear plastic shelves will break off. Don't buy a new door. Buy some 1" sticky back velcro tape from ebay. You'll need about a metre for the two big shelves. Stick this on (it is a bit tight when refitting but persevere it will fit), and hey presto, problem solved. The freezer compartment door hinge has broken now, so I... (read more)

I have owned one of these fridges for 7 years now, and just about everything on it that is not under warranty has broken on it!!!! Anyway,if anyone is interested i have found a good easy way to repair the freezer box door (so called hinges). I am talking about the small plastic lugs that are actually moulded to th freezer compartment door. This will save a small fortune in replacement doors and my repair is still holding after 2 years. Well here goes, if one or both of the little plastic... (read more)

When the freezer door hinges snapped, I thought it was me being clumsy. When the door shelf metal retainers snapped, I thought I was being clumsy. When the fridge light stopped working (even with new bulb), I realised...it's not me!!! Then I googled reviews on this fridge, and low and behold, lots of others have had the same experience. The plastic corners of the main shelves have now broken and are supported by thin pieces of wood, and the door seal has always had a gap at the top right.... (read more)

It looks fantastic in my 50's kitchen and I absolutely adore it....but I am now having to order a new freezer door after it fell off(hinges snapped), and prior to that the opening hinge broke, so it had not sealed properly for a good few months resulting in an iced up freezer and leaking water! Also one of the lids on the door shelf broke easily. There is someting about this Smeg FAB fridge that allows you to forgive it almost anything... Mine is over 4 years old and the freezer door broke about 2 years ago (expensive to replace)so we just sealed it up and don't use it. Purchased the Smeg Fab 28 just over 4 years ago. It was a big, expensive mistake, and we didn't even pay close to the full price, having purchased from an internet retailer. The seal on the door went just before the guarantee, and this was repaired twice (reasonably successfully after having a whole new door fitted). I've had it for about six years now and every time I open it, I wish I hadn't bothered buying it. I love the Smeg FAB 28 fridge I bought, but I can understand some of the other reviews. They are not the best quality, no doubt, but it's important to remember what it is!
It's an Italian manufacturer, and it looks great, like an Alfa. It'll never be built like an Audi or Merc, but it's got more style in its little toe than lets say an AEG fridge.

I had my Smeg FAB 28 Retro delivered this afternoon and I only WISH I had known about these reviews prior to buying it. My experience of my Smeg FAB 28 retro is the same as all the other reviewers. Within a year the rubber seal on the door broke. The entire door had to be replaced. We have had to replace the plastic bottle holders and the other containers attached to the door. The freezer door at the top never closes properly. We have also replaced it numerous times as the fragile 'pin- type' fasteners snap off. All these replacement parts are expensive. Also as the freezer door is not designed to close too... (read more)

I have had problems ever since we bought our FAB 28 fridge. The Freezer door gave way after about 1 year. I think everyone that has one of these has replaced the door. But my biggest issue at present is that the plastic insert on the back of the main door is very cheap. The lugs which hold the bottle carriers perish after 3 years and now I cannot use them. A triumph of style over substance. We bought our SMEG FAB 28 Retro fridge freezer about three years ago.
