“These fridges are popular for a reason!”

Written on: 11/05/2013

I've had my red Smeg fridge freezer for about 7 years now without any real problems. Yes, you do have to regularly defrost the freezer section or it gets really iced up.I think one of the shelves broke when I was cleaning it but no hassle to replace it. I'm thinking about replacing the red fridge with a cream one but as there's still a few years' wear left in it, I'll sell the red one for a couple of hundred quid. Because of all the bad press the Smeg retro fridges get, I have looked around... (read more)

“Left Me Cold”

Written on: 06/05/2013 by Chrisimo

I was seduced by how this fridge looked - lovely bright colour and sensuous curves. But now it needs constant defrosting no matter what setting you have it on, all the door trays and salad trays are cracked and broken. It's rubbish. Definitely style over substances. I thought Smeg was a top brand but I won't be buying another of their products. (read more)

Great retro looking fridge, initially took a few weeks to get the SMEG levelled up properly but then had no problems at all until 6 months ago when the internal light started to flicker (more off than on) whenever the fridge door was opened so i changed the bulb over which has proved to be a big mistake has it hasn't worked since, this does become a problem at night when the kitchen lights are off & we just want to grab a drink out of the fridge but i am going to have another go at replacing... Purchased this as I always wanted one in lime green had it two months the door on the fridge the seal at the top was coming apart. Had it replaced they said my kitchen floor was not level. New door fitted I have left it while the same thing happening but the seal has come away a lot making the fridge at the back wet with the warm air getting in leading to leaking water on the floor at the back. Rang again. I need a new door they say my kitchen floor is not level. Never had this problem with... (read more)

“Style over Substance!!!!”

Written on: 16/06/2012

If only I had read these reviews first! STYLE...STYLE...STYLE, but there it ends. In particular the quality of all plastic components/fittings (not under guarantee. Surprise!) is terrible. All drawers, door racks etc in fridge & freezer compartments have cracked/shattered/broken. We have had it around 5 years. The trouble began almost immediately. There is just the two of us, useage, careful. God knows what it must be like in a busy family household..'tho I can imagine!! Disappointing is an... (read more)

If it was a racehorse..it would have been put down by now. Icebox door has broken and is long gone..shelves are poor and broken..and it drips water It has terrible build quality and durability. I have to defrost it regularly I would never buy another as they are rubbish. It was cheap enough at the time I think..and my wife loves it. which brings me on to this point: it is still working 6 years on..and does keep stuff cold..so that is all I can say for it. Without question our worst purchase EVER! The first one was delivered with a faulty seal and was replaced after a week. The second lasted two whole months before the freezer door tab broke and yes, the seal also failed to seal the fridge properly. The freezer compartment drips water on to the food beneath, and the light has a will all of it's own.

I know it may look good, and everybody assumes SMEG is a great make - but no, just because it's expensive does not mean that this is good... (read more)

I wish I could also say something good but it's the same story for quality control down here in Australia. Broken plastic within, trays etc. I wish I bought an old round one, with a cast metal handle as that after a recondition would have gone for another 40 years. Now that's a good business idea, new motors in old retro fridges, classic not plastic!!!

My wife wanted a SMEG FAB fridge a few years ago. Nothing but trouble from the outset. I have a fix for broken door shelves. Inevitably the lugs in the door that support the clear plastic shelves will break off. Don't buy a new door. Buy some 1" sticky back velcro tape from ebay. You'll need about a metre for the two big shelves. Stick this on (it is a bit tight when refitting but persevere it will fit), and hey presto, problem solved. Anyway,if anyone is interested i have found a good easy way to repair the freezer box door (so called hinges). When the fridge light stopped working (even with new bulb), I realised...it's not me!!! Then I googled reviews on this fridge, and low and behold, lots of others have had the same experience. There is someting about this Smeg FAB fridge that allows you to forgive it almost anything... Mine is over 4 years old and the freezer door broke about 2 years ago (expensive to replace)so we just sealed it up and don't use it. Purchased the Smeg Fab 28 just over 4 years ago. It was a big, expensive mistake, and we didn't even pay close to the full price, having purchased from an internet retailer. The seal on the door went just before the guarantee, and this was repaired twice (reasonably successfully after having a whole new door fitted). Looking for Retro fridges then try these manufacturers first

Gorenje- 5 year parts and labour guarantee
Lec-?
All the above much cheaper than Smeg.

Loved the look of our new Smeg FAB 28 Retro but in no time at all it was clear that this was a case of style over substance. Door on ice box broke, compartments on door broke, door fails to shut and now glass shelfs have broken! I love the Smeg FAB 28 fridge I bought, but I can understand some of the other reviews. They are not the best quality, no doubt, but it's important to remember what it is!
It's an Italian manufacturer, and it looks great, like an Alfa. It'll never be built like an Audi or Merc, but it's got more style in its little toe than lets say an AEG fridge.

We brought the retro Smeg fridge freezer 3 years ago and everything has gone wrong. The seals have cracked and rotted. It continually drips water down the back and from the inside ceiling which has rotted the seals and makes the butter sections mouldy as water leaks in. The plastic sections crack and have been replaced multiple times due to the plastic not being frost proof!! It looks wonderful but is a nightmare - we are having to replace it as it is now continually wet and mouldy
