I use a couple of VOIP and Skype is the worse one.

I talk for hours to the US from the UK and free calls would seem to be the answer.

I have used Skype with a USB phone, a belkin wireless phone, Nokia N95 with Fring, Iskoot, Iskoot for 3 and a usb to PTSN adapter. In all spending quite a bit of money to get the right service.

With every method I try the call quality is not acceptable and thats using 6 or 10mb broadband with nothing else running.

Other services, mainly Sipgate, using the Nok ...

Great in theory, but I am not a frequent user. Your Skype account will expire after 180 days of not using the pay as you go service.
This means my skype credit expired twice by now and has cost me over £15!
Their excuse is that accounting rules require it, that's daylight robbery.

Erratic connections to non-skype services, never offered a caller display number on the receiving phone (although they do not guarantee one, it is still part of the service that is supposed to work) and the worst thing by far, as a business user paying for subscriptions is the business control panel. I experience the business interface to be full of glitches, black holes and mis-allocated credit and numbers.

$200 for the phone $20-$30 for an (802) area code and about $63 per year for unlimited VOIP use, not too bad if the blasted thing worked. Oh, and good luck trying to get anywhere with tech service. My partner has been a computer tech and wireless network tech for many, many years as has her brother and they worked on the darn thing daily without positive results. Sometimes newer is not always better.

Free calls and less connection charge through Skype - you need to register but was easy. Some reported echo from my contacts but having spoken to Belkin Support it may be my contacts end or I may have to use a different Port on my Firewall/Wireless Router. I need to find out exactly how to do this.
Support from Belkin on a question of phone time alway being out was not good. But overall I'm pleased with Skype 1.4 but could be better.

Overall Skype was good when they started but lately they had so many bugs in their service that there is a constant need to update all the time.

Great if using free subscription for Skype to Skype, however check the small print as forum has lots of complaints about charges that was not stated.

I have been using Skype for years now, even when it was in beta, and it was great then, and it just gets better and better all the time. It's a great online tool that is catching on faster and faster, with free online calls and IM's, and also very cheap Skypeout calls to the world, so it is great to use, and not only for business!

I use Skype for business daily, if not hourly. I also use it to call family in Australia, Holland and Kenya, for free. I call Shanghai office several times a day, for free. I even call Indonesian suppliers daily, on their normal phone, at 1/10 the cost of a normal call.

I believe everyone in business should use it. It will save everyone a fortune.

Paypal have an offer on to get free call credit to register (which is also available to existing Skype customers). It is worth checking out! (May 2006).

I have used Skype as keep in touch with diverse colleagues, around the world. Online, we can talk and message and used Skype for conference calls with sales teams.

Quality of calls is very dependant on the bandwidth and below 64KB connection, I do get break up on calls.

I have not found a way to transfer contacts from one computer to another.

Continue to use Skype as a great tool for keeping in touch with colleagues around the world

I've been using Skype VOIP to communicate with a geographically dispersed software development team. It's great in that it has saved us money on long distance phone calls, I don't waste time calling someone that is not around because I can see if they are online and we can easily transfer files back and forth!

I've just downloaded Skype 1.4 free of charge (7mb) and legged it to the shops to get a microphone headset. After speaking to my friend for a while who now has skype too, I can say that it is pretty good.

I bought £5 worth of call credit that allows me to call any phone number in the world for about half the price of a local call (not sure of costs exactly but it is cheap). See skype.com for details.

You can also rent a phone number based in other parts of the world too. This number ...
