Bought it to replace a different make that became unusable when the Freeview system was updated. Has worked fairly well for a couple of years or more. Since the new allocation of channels came in it keeps losing all channels except 1 - 9. It is (was) used with a Philips flat screen TV, and the controls used to interfere with each other. I, too used to rate Philips products but not so much now. I will buy a different make - but what? (read more)

Thirty-three quid in Tesco's - the cheapest I found anywhere PLUS the advantage of Tesco's no-quibble guarantee and returns policy.
This Philips DTR200 does the job and does it well. I feel the negative comments about it on this board result from aerial/signal strength problems as especially the BBC channels are reproduced perfectly. Channel 5 is problematical with occasional freezing and pixellation and little wonder with the signal strength indicator bars doing a waltz. As this digital TV...

Subsequent experience with many other people's digiboxes of all makes and prices simply reinforces my original comments on aerials and transmitter location.
All academic now anyway as I have binned my TV owing to the nauseating garbage from ALL channels not to mention interminable repeats and I now get all the entertainment I want from the Internet.

Personally not happy with the Philips DTR200 freeview box. We bought it to upgrade from an old box we had that pixalated occasionally so the aerial and set-up were already proven. The Philips box was nowhere near as good as the old thing we had. Simply do not recommend it. (read more)

Philips DTR200 Freeview box review - I have rated Philips products for 30 years, they have been very good, but no more, this is rubbish, and if this is the way forward then Philips should give it up and call it a day. I had my heart set on a Philips LCD TV but not now. I guess it will be Sony. (read more)

Locks up once or twice a day and doesn't respond to remote. Have to unplug to reset.
Picture constantly disappears from screen taking 5 or so seconds to come back on. This is nothing to do with reception and happens sometimes once every 10 seconds making viewing impossible.
Remote interferes with my TV, sometimes turning the TV on or off instead of the freeview.
Sometimes distorts my CRT TV's picture with purple/blue/inverted magnetic artifacts in the corners and needs degaussing.
This is a...

My DTR220 unit has an amazing fault whereby, if I am recording anything overnight, it is determined to ask me (at about 3 a.nm.) whether I wish to apply the latest software upgrade (even if I have done that manually before I set up the recording) and THEN, to add to the craziness of this situation, switches itself back to a completely different channel!
Bad enough to lose part of what I was recording but to then record something completely different!!
I have contacted the Philips service...

I found this review very helpful because it mirrors my findings on this particular digibox and reinforces my belief that factors outside of Philips' control are to blame for poor performance.
<br/>I find it inconceivable that a company of such standing as Philips would market such a dog as is claimed by other reviewers and anyway, after reading around, it seems that EVERY digibox on the market is not free from a bug of some kind. I hope your DTR200 gives you long and satisfactory service, Listy.

I bought it as a present for my parents and it does not work well at all, you cannot turn it off at the mains as you need to rescan (very slow) whenever you turn it on. It is therefore very wasteful of electricity. It is built in flimsy, tacky plastic. the user interface is poor, Sagem ones are much better. It frequently loses contact with channels while having good reception with others. (read more)

I bought this Philips DTR200 box about 8 months ago, but only started using it regularly recently.
The box looks OK, has a nice remote control and was easy to set up.
After a few channel changes the box freezes and does not respond to the remote control. This happens repeatedly and can only be cleared by unplugging the mains. Doing this 7 or 8 times during the course of a few hours viewing gets very wearing!
Sometimes there is a picture with no sound, and then (just for variety) at other...

I used to swear by Philips as a brand, but they have obviously dropped all the quality standards to cut costs.
Poorly designed, cheap components and very poor reliability.
I for one, have now decided to never buy another Philips product again after my experience with the Philips DTR200 freeview box.

The Philips DTR200 freeview box is a complete and utter waste of money. I connected everything and it didn't work, then I thought maybe it needs to be connected to the main aerial, but that didn't make any difference, and it always has the barest signal so it freezes, and then you have to turn it on and off or wave it about and hope for the best. Utter rubbish! I wouldn't even give it away. It's gone in the bin.
I will avoid Philips products in future.

I plugged in the Philips DTR200 freeview box and it tuned itself (a bit slow). It worked straight away. Good picture, good sound/volume - a bit lacking compared to terrestrial TV. I think a lot of reported problems with this model may be down to poor aerials (indoor ones for Freeview?!) and/or poor reception areas.
If it is a simple component failure, these things happen (only once is acceptable). I will reserve further comment until Tesco/Philips respond and the system is up and running...

I bought the Philips DTR 200/05 freeview box from Asda for £44.97, having returned a cheaper different unit which began to freeze after about six months. But, this new unit began to freeze regularly after only 24 hours! I am afraid that I will be returning this one also. I guess I will have to bite the bullet and pay extra to get some reliability. This is the second Philips DTR200 freeview box I have owned. After taking the first one back due to it turning itself off, poor reception, screen going blank (but sound continuing), and failing to respond to remote etc.
A total waste of time and money. Luckily it was a present, so I haven't wasted my own hard-earned cash!
I won't buy anything from Philips again.

Bought a Philips DTR200 Freeview box in October '05 primarily for the way it looks. Compact design and the silver/black finish looks great.
Used it at first with an aerial off an old portable (5-10% signal). Sky channels and E4 would get awful reception regardless of adjustment. On top of that box would jam and would have to unplug to reset. Hooked up a mains powered aerial with 42db gain signal jumped to 90% all round. Problem solved! Nope, picture still distorts and jams frequently,...

I have just got a Philips DTR200 freeview box from Argos, and I'm taking it straight back. It keeps freezing up, and it has to be powered off at the mains to get it back up and running again. It even locks-up when not in use, ie on standby. The mains adapter came with a two pin shaver type plug and no adapter. (read more)

For the first few hours the Philips DTR200 freeview box seemed really good, but then it proceeded to corrupt sound and vision on some channels, all good signal strength (~80%). I ended up rebooting this box at least 3-4 times in a couple of hours. Sometimes it helped, sometimes not. After a week of this, I gave up. A complete fresh setup left half the channels missing, only to reappear at the 4th attempt. I have a feeling it plays up once warm, but unless you only want to watch 30 minutes of... (read more)

I have persevered, since we can't afford a better replacement right now, and some interesting things are emerging. How it performs is very variable. Mostly reception problems occur at night. This may be due to changing transmission strength due to weather, or possibly sensitivity to mains voltage fluctuations. However, I have since added an analogue loop-through cable to the TV, so we can at least switch to analogue without grovelling behind the set. The presence of this lead seems to have helped to an extent, and it makes me wonder if the issue is that the signal strength is too high and was overloading the box's front end (it shows 85% or so on screen). With the lead, it's probably being attenuated some by connection to the TV's RF circuitry. It seems to give significantly less trouble anyhow, so may be worth trying by anyone unlucky enough to own a DTR200.

I am the unproud owNer of this box which freezes, locks up, can suddenly dump half the channels, gives text when it wants to but best of all, has now started to change channels by itself or switch itself on and off at random. This box is great for its agro rating and for people who are not really bothered what channel they want. RUBBISH RUBBISH RUBBISH.

Bertie's Response to Bertie's Review

I always like to get to the bottom of things, so I did a little research and found that there is no technical reason at the transmitter end (a relay station in my case) for problems with channel 5. A slight repositioning of the aerial (a home-made broadband Vee made of cardboard and aluminium cooking foil and mounted in the loft) and a re-tune of the digibox solved the problem. Now channel 5 shows maximum signal strength like the other channels and has remained thus. I rest my case!
