General comments: Milan has so much to offer, and it is the perfect place to visit if you are looking for a city break. If you love art and culture, beautiful people, food (if you get the opportunity you must try Risotto alla Milanese, it is an unforgettable experience), and fashion, then you will be very much at home in the worlds fashion capital.
There are so many things to do in Milan; a week would be preferable to a weekend, or in my case a lifetime.
You can't visit Milan without seeing the Duomo. The Duomo is a beautiful gothic cathedral situated in the heart of the city. It is absolutely awe-inspiring!! You could easily spend hours just gazing at its beauty. You can take a lift to the roof of the cathedral where you can enjoy a terrific view of the city, and there is also a museum in the basement where you can see what remains of the ancient Roman ruins that are beneath the Duomo.
Milan is also famous for the Teatro alla Scala, and you can get tickets to see a show all year round. La Scala has recently been completely rebuilt. The result is fantastic from an architectural viewpoint, but many people would say that the old glorious building is now lost forever. Don't let that put you off paying a visit though, as it is still a lovely building, as are so many of the buildings in Milan.
I couldn't possibly write a review about Milan without mentioning the Navigli. Around the Navigli is the best place to go if you want to enjoy an evening out in Milan. The Navigli district is located near two canals, which look absolutely amazing at night. The Navigli successfully mixes society with all types of bars, clubs and restaurants, offering something for everyone. By day the Naviglio Grande and Naviglio Pavese's antique shops and art galleries are definitely worth a look. It is an amazing place. The Naviglio Grande comes to life spectacularly in the month of December, when the Christmas lights render a warm atmosphere.
The beginning of December is also when the 'Milanesi' celebrate Festa di Sant' Ambrogio (patron saint of Milan). Festa di Sant' Ambrogio is celebrated in style with religious ceremonies and tradition. The Fiera di Sant' Ambrogio takes place around the Basilica di S.Ambrogio and develops all around the streets of that area. The market is one of the most important events of Sant' Ambrogio, and I would, without a doubt, recommend the Christmas market at the Piazza della Basilica di San Ambrogio.
Milan is great for shopping, especially if you love designer clothes. There are numerous shops in Milan's fashionable Montenapoleone shopping district, and all the best designers have shops and boutiques in this area.
If you are travelling with Children, then a visit to Gardaland is a definite must. Gardaland is the largest theme park in Italy, and although it is situated about 150km outside of Milan, near Lake Garda (close to the Swiss border), it would be a travesty not to take the children. The position of the park is stunning, and the park offers entertainment and rides for people of all ages.
I could go on and on about the things Milan has to offer. There is a tremendous amount of culture and entertainment etc., and the people and architecture will astound you.
A beautiful city - Highly recommended!!!
