“Bad food and service”

★☆☆☆☆

written by on 08/10/2014

When we visited Strada Reading, 4 of the 7 mussels in the Linguine alla Pescatora were closed and the staff didn't have a mussel cracker and didn't offer to open or replace them so I couldn't eat them. Strada have claimed that it is the natural product itself that doesn't always go to plan, no matter how they are cooked. However I about 3 days later I had about 40 mussels at Café Rouge and only 2 were closed.

“Dreadful customer service”

★☆☆☆☆

written by Kat57 on 04/09/2013

Had the misfortune to visit Strada in Westfield, Stratford City where despite there being very few customers service was slow to the point of standstill. Eventually after 40 minutes waiting for 2 pizzas I managed to attract a member of staff and was told the food was being cooked again as the original order had burnt. This happens but there was no apology or information offered to let us know earlier and we were left just sitting there and how long does it take to cook a pizza. When the food did turn up the order was wrong. Strada have no method of complaint by e-mail just a generic feedback questionnaire so I took the time to write to them by post to receive a generic letter about training etc. No a way to run a business don't give them your money

“tiny portions!”

★★★☆☆

written by veetee on 22/08/2013

I visited the sheffield restaurant early weekday evening with a friend. I was impressed to find that everything on the food and drinks menu was italian (wines/ beers/spirits),however, don't expect a 'house wine'- cheapest on the menu was £15 (we settled for 2 large peronis). The interior is nice, fresh and contemporary. We ordered some sicilian olives whilst waiting for the main but paid £3.50 for 9 olives which was disappointing. We had seafood risotto and although the amount of seafood was o.k and baby plum tomatoes nice, the amount of risotto rice was tiny and lacked the depth of flavour and consistency of authentic italian risottos. I was still hungry after my meal and I am only 5 foot tall and 8 stone!I would not recommend this restaurant as it is not good value for money and lets itself down with its obviously strict portion control and lack of time given to preparing a good risotto rice ( although the pizzas that guests on another table had ordered looked good) I had not realised before visiting that Strada is a chain of restaurants but on visiting, this is in fact apparent

“Terrible dont go ”

★☆☆☆☆

written by Tomred345 on 29/06/2013

Gone down hill horrendously !! Food looked cheap like it came straight from the the basic range at the local supermarket !! Burnt no flavour and small portion ! They had already brought out the wrong plates of food twice and when we said the manager had the cheek to speak to my girlfriend with disrespect and say hope your starter filled you rubbing his stomach.. Very unprofessional. The one member of staff was very polite but everything else starters mains and sides really were terrible.

“Gone downhill”

written by Ashton100 on 23/02/2013

When Strada 1st entered the scene a few years ago, as a chain they had much to be proud of. The food and service were excellent. In fact if i am not mistaken the restaurant was the brainchild of Richard Caring of the Ivy Roll on 6 years and now owned by venture capitalists, much has changed and regretably for the worse I have been working abroad for 18 months and on return, Carafes of complimentary filtered water- gone Real linen napkins- gone Superlative thoughtful service-gone Truly fresh ingredients - gone Stradais now just another formula restaurant where the food is processed at a central factory kitchen, with strict portion contrrol and no flair or imagination to the food or service Why do we have to put up with thiese constant rubbish chains run by bankers not restrateurs

Having regularly gone to Strada in the evenng and lunchtime, we were very disapointed with our recent experience when the menu had changed beyond all recognition. We will not go again! Not value for money.

“Best Pizza!”

★★★★★

written by headjess on 02/08/2012

I love Italian food, especially pizza. Me and my other half have been doing the rounds trying to find out which is our fav chain Italian to eat at. We always get voucher from the MSE newsettler so we wanted to put them togood use :) After trying Ask, Prezzo and Zizzi we went to Strada and I have to say, best yet. The service was great and the food was amazing considering what it cost! We both had pizzas that were massive and a starter and wine and the bill came to under £40! Bargain! Will 100% be going back for more!

“great place”

written by on 04/11/2011

I fly from heathrow couple of times a year and I enjoy eating at Strada because of the food they provide. The only problem that I have is that the staff look a bit out of space, running around doing nothing much and the space is so overcrowded with so many tables! This time I was nicely surpised by the service offered by my waitress, andresa if I remember, even if she was new she apologised and went out of her way to make my stay pleasant. I would recommand the restaurant to a friend and for sure I will eat there everytime.

“Absolutely dire. The starter was nice, but overpriced,...”

★☆☆☆☆

written by on 01/04/2011

Absolutely dire. The starter was nice, but overpriced, and the main was completely mediocre.
We waited 5 minutes for a menu, 10 minutes for our order to be taken (only after I called the waitress over), the drinks took another 10 minutes to arrive, then the starter came about 5 minutes after that. We were left with empty plates for about 10 minutes before someone cleared them away.
We then waited half an hour for two microwaved portions of vegetarian pasta in tomato sauce (in which time the waitress lied about the dishes being 'almost ready' when I questioned her), and unwittingly paid a supposedly 'optional' service charge hidden in the bill. The service we received didn't warrant a tip of any kind; it was atrocious. Having had a bad experience with the service in Strada in the past (this was only my second visit in about 5 years), I thought they might have improved, given that they charge enough for a customer to expect at least reasonable service. However, following this awful experience I will never visit Strada again. They did not even earn one star for service or value for money in my view.

“My husband and I visted this restaurant after work for...”

★★★☆☆

written by Sussex Old Girl on 18/02/2011

My husband and I visted this restaurant after work for a quick pizza as we were going on to the cinema.
When we arrived there was no welcome so we sat down where we fancied. A girl did come over quickly to take our drinks order but when they came over she had made a mistake and we got an orange juice not a cranberry one.
We then waited half an hour for two pizzas and a side salad when there were only 3 other groups there.
The pizzas were very good when they came and then we got asked twice within several minutes from two different girls whether everything was okay with our meals. As if they really care!
The whole atmosphere was sterile and cold. Hopefully it would be better in summer but I'm not interested in finding out!

We had a fabulous time at Strada! We very nearly ended up eating at Il Bertorelli, but left after sitting at our table for 5 minutes and no one speaking to us at all!
It was my birthday and I'd gone out for dinner with my partner, the food was delicious and Jana, our waitress couldn't have been any better. Her recommendations were excellent and we even got a birthday shot of limoncello.
Definitely one to recommend and I'll certainly go to other Strada restaurants based on this one.
Thank you!

“2 persons ordered fish of the day (red mullet)....”

★☆☆☆☆

written by on 28/09/2010

2 persons ordered fish of the day (red mullet). Portion was truly abysmal, three pieces of 6cm long, 3cm wide and 1cm thick. McDonalds' kids' fish-finger menu is certainly more filling, costs abt £2.5 and comes with a toy! Strada's red mullet came with nothing apart from the cost of £14.75!!
(and to set the record straight the comparison is purely on quantity of the fish, not quality)
When we complained to the manager he admitted the portion was way too small to fill up an adult and said that he is not the one who decides on portions. We said that the fish should have come as a whole fish, to which he replied that normally this is how they serve their fish but the red mullet is a much more expensive fish so the portions are smaller!! Does this mean that with red mullet, at the price of £14.75, we only get to sample the dish????!?!?! It was a starter portion, not a main, not even for us 2 who are female, 5'2" and very very cautious with how much we eat!!
After a long discussion (which made our tiny red mullet portion cold), as an apology, the manager offered us either coffee or limoncello. The latter came in the wrong glass and had 5 ice-cubes in it!! Who on this earth would imagine that they would go to an ITALIAN restaurant and get to have limoncello in the most NON-ITALIAN way ever?! Adding 5 ice-cubes to 2 drops of limoncello will not make it look like a bigger portion, just shows that STRADA cannot assess the customers' intelligence, even after the same customers have exemplified that they are not stupid.
Both the above are indicators that Strada are on a serious cost cutting exercise on the expense of insulting the intelligence of their customers.
It is sad because in terms of quality of their food, Strada could be described as Italian-like. But after today's experience we would not say the same about portions or traditional Italian drinks!
P.S. Nothing personal with the Manager or the waitors. In fact we could see their reaction to our reaction with regards to the portions of the fish. They were equally as shocked and I know I would be the same. In fact, I would refuse to serve this to anyone as a main to begin with.

written by on 19/09/2010

We booked a table for 10 for a birthday, and found the service very slow. We were seated at 7pm and by the time we got our bill it was 10pm! Myself and my husband ordered the basket of bread as a starter which was to come with balsamic vinegar and oil, but we were kept waiting for 10 minutes to get the dips! By which time the bread went cold. To add to the disatisfaction, the main meals were very poor, and we left half of the food on the plate. Out mains were Risotto Carciofi and Risotto Frutti di Mare. We found both dishes were uncooked. The risotto was hard on the inside, and we found ourselves picking the hard centres out of our teeth. For my seafood risotto, i found the legs of the squid in my plate, which put me off the meal. We ended up paying alot of money for our meal which included uncooked risotto, squid legs, and cold bread. I would not return to this restaurant, nor would i recommend it to anyone. Very poor service, with poor food.

“We have been going to a number of different Strada...”

★★☆☆☆

written by on 04/08/2010

We have been going to a number of different Strada restaurants around the Country over the last few years and were always impressed with the service/value/quality until the last 12 months when things seem to have slipped in general. We had problems with a recent visit with a Strada in Leamington Spa and were given a money off voucher due to the issues we raised, so we decided to use it in another nearby Strada in Stratford Upon Avon a few days ago. Upon arrival we noted they were very busy at the front of the restaurant but quieter further back, but the waitress insisted upon placing us upon the one remaining unoccupied table at the very front. As it was lunchtime we decided to opt for 3 main courses on their £6.95 special offer menu, plus starters off the usual menu. Upon arrival of our starters the waitress picked up my wine glass and held it in her hand around the rim whilst she made room for the plates, rather than ask me to move it! Then,as we were eating our appetisers, and still had plates/cutlery in use, the waiter brought our main courses and tried to push our starter plates to one side, with food still on them! I said that he should take them away as we were not ready yet, which he did. After eventually getting our main courses re-served to us, we noted how small the portions were. We know it was a lunch-time lower priced main course, but to give an example, my friend had the spinach/ricotta parcels of which there were 6 very small pasta parcels with lukewarm tomato sauce. We would still expect a main course option to be the size of a main and not a starter. The waiter then cleared everything away with no comment. Overall we felt very disappointed with Strada and its evident slip in quality and service. This was especially a let down as we were going to Stratford to make up for the problems we experienced at Leamington Spa. We doubt if we will now return.

Other branches of Strada seem to be getting a pasting on this website, but the one in Wilmslow is reliably excellent - easy parking, really nice interior design, great food at good prices, unobtrusive yet attentive staff. I've also never had a problem at their other branches, and the fact you can use Tesco Deals tokens there makes it a bargain. In fact I think Strada is tha best national chain in this price range at the moment - great and really reliable.

“This review is about Strada in West Hampstead. ”

★★★★☆

written by Angels Sin on 14/09/2009

This review is about Strada in West Hampstead.

I visited Strada at around 2pm on Saturday afternoon. It wasn't very busy but still managed to create a nice relaxing and welcoming atmosphere. We seated ourselves at a slightly wobbly table outside and were quickly welcomed with a selection of menus and told about the special lunch offer, then we were left to make our choices.

We felt the menu, wine especially looked a little expensive for the type of restaurant Strada is (the cheapest being around £17), however we settled on a bottle of white for about £22. We also ordered water, risotto and I had Spaghetti Al Ragu. We were asked if we would like Garlic Bread whilst we waited which we agreed to. The wine was ought to our table quickly and the garlic bread followed after round 10 minutes. It was presented in a large basket and looked more like garlic pita bread. It looked slightly greasy, but I was pleased to find that this was nit the case on tasting. It was hot and good, although didn't taste very strongly of garlic.

Around 20 minutes later our main course arrived. This is when the size of our small table for two became a problem. It was a hard squeeze to accommodate a basket of bread, wine and water bottles as well as two main courses.

My Spaghetti was nicely cooked and plenty of it although lacked a little flavour. The risotto I'm told was delicious.

We didn't feel rushed through our meal and found our lunch very enjoyable with nice food and attentive waiting staff.

The bill came to £47 including a service charge and we look forward to a return visit.

“I have had an appalling experience at Strada...”

★☆☆☆☆

written by on 14/09/2009

I have had an appalling experience at Strada Birmingham ICC. First time I went to Strada I was very impressed with their service and food, however it was a different story this time. I found this waiter very rude and unhelpful from the start. Originally we just wanted to have drinks and asked a table for 7 people. He told me that we had to sit in two separate tables so I asked if it's OK to put them together, then he went "ah, not really because they are round table". At this point I had already known everything we ask would be a hassle for him. We helped ourselves to put them closer and sat down. Some of us decided to have food as well so we asked for a food menu. Then he pulled an annoyed face AGAIN and went inside. I was not going to take his attitude anymore and said "if it's a hassle for you, we are going to go out". He started speaking to me in an aggressive manner so I walked away. He was still carrying on telling us what he was trying to say in a rude manner at our table and apparently he did not want us to be having a food at where we were even though all other tables were empty apart from one. Then when he started putting other tables together for us, a table's leg caught a chair and a glass fell on the floor and broke. My hand was touching the table as I was trying to help but I did not push. All my friends were watching so they knew I didn't, but the waiter started shouting at me saying he is not going to take this abuse and accusing me of pushing the table to disturb him because he was totally wound up. We just walked away from the restaurant at this point. I just cannot believe he did not realise himself that he was moody and rude from the start. I am not an unreasonable person to complain about anything unless I feel to be treated rudely and unfairly.

★★☆☆☆

written by on 29/08/2009

We had been to the branch outside the Festival Hall on the south bank last year, which was a better experience than at Highgate last night. The service was OK but the next table had problems getting their order. I had a pork saltimbocca, which is a fillet of pork wrapped in ham with a stuffing of sage leaves that give the distinctive taste to the dish. At the halfway stage I realised that there was no evidence of sage to be found under the ham. My wife had scallop risotto which was very oily and not very good. We were doing a 2 for the price of one deal with a voucher, so combined with the frenetic atmosphere we saw no point in sending the food back, as we were halfway through it. I asked the waitress about the missing sage, she spoke to chef who said it had been missed at the 'prep' stage and was sorry about that. Still a full service charge on the bill though, and no reduction for the omission. Maybe the mushroom omelettes have no mushrooms? Goodbye Strada.

written by on 27/08/2009

On the plus side, the strada restaurant has a nice atmosphere and nice decor.

It took about 45m for the starter to come (and it was not worth waiting for). The waiter wasn't particularly attentive.

The food was not great. Our party complained that the pizza's, salads, and garlic bread were overly salty. Additionally, the salad had way too much vinegar. Seems like the chef is heavy handed and doesn't taste his food when cooking. All in all the food I had was quite unpleasant due to the salt and vinegar levels. I'll be drinking water for the rest of the day and will likely have acid reflux when I wake tomorrow morning.

★★☆☆☆

written by speakout on 17/04/2009

The service is always very efficient at Strada but the food is not always up to scratch. The Strada in Richmond as pointed out by a different reviewer is also extremely limited in space. Whilst there last month with my partner, I had to avoid being hit in the head (twice) by a person sat at the table next to us who was emphasising her conversation with her chums. We had a laugh about it at the time but really there should be more space inbetween tables, not just for privacy of diners but also to make things easier for the waiting staff. My other gripe about Strada (not sure if it is just Richmond) but the tables also seem really small so if you have sides as well as a main dish and a bottle of wine, there is not enough room to put everything comfortably. Again, this is not easy for the waiting staff who seemingly do a very good job at handling the problem. My previous meal at the local Strada will probably be my last as the pasta was just awful. The dish was meant to have contained a gorgonzola sauce but was so bland that I would bet it had no cheese in it at all and was in fact just a plain white sauce. It is a shame that I have been put off this chain as the decor is always very nice, the service excellent and I like the complimentary bottles of water but recently the food has in my opinion not been up to scratch.
