Good Points: Very grand reception area.
Nice location on promenade, and only a 10 - 15 minute stroll to Maspalomas lighthouse.

Bad Points: Understaffed restaurant, food cold, constant queues in dining room, dirty cutlery/tableware, very cramped pool areas, building work at hotel.

General comments: My husband and I visited the Gran Hotel in Meloneras, Gran Canaria, in September 2005. Check in was very slow, and we were handed a map and pointed in the direction of the lift - no night porter to assist with luggage!
The rooms are quite spacious, however, having paid for a sea view, we were disappointed to realise we needed binoculars to see the sea. We would also recommend taking slippers, as to walk barefoot in the room means extremely dirty feet for the duration of your stay.
The restaurant is very understaffed, tableware/cutlery is dirty with remnants of dried food, food is cold, and some nights we could queue for 30 minutes to get food. Breakfast is a bit better, however, again be prepared to queue.
There are a few different pools, all of which are jam-packed with sun beds, and with no privacy at all. There were few beds available after 10am. The larger pool was cleaned every day, however, the smaller pool which we frequented got progressively dirtier as the two weeks went on.
To top it all there was building work just outside the hotel perimeter, which we were not advised of.
In summary, this hotel looks the part, but definitely does not meet the standards of service expected in a 5 star hotel. Meloneras is a nice quiet area with excellent weather, however, if wishing to visit, I would definitely not recommend this hotel unless the price is dramatically reduced!
