An excellent car, which will serve you well throughout many years - as long as you do not scrimp on the servicing, which is not cheap! Expect no more than 30mpg, group 19 insurance and £800 plus per 12000 mile service with the Alfa Romeo GTV 3.0 V6 24v and you won't be disappointed.

“Forget the 2.0 Twin Spark GTV - do what I did and blow...”

Forget the 2.0 Twin Spark GTV - do what I did and blow a few more shreddies on the Alfa Romeo GTV 3.0 V6 and save cash long term. Seriously.... it is far more reliable and less fault-ridden (engine, suspension, gearbox) than the Twin Spark. The Alfa 3.0 unit has basically been in production since the 70's, and it has been developed continually to give you this 24v masterpiece.

It really is a license-shredder. On the motorway you'll be amazed how fast you're actually going. Go above 4000rpm in any gear and wallop! Very little can touch it (eg - M3), believe me. It's extremely responsive, and so smooth, even at 7000rpm, but the best bit is it's accompanied by the most glorious soundtrack this side of a Lamborghini. It's an absolute pleasure. Surely one of THE greatest engines ever produced.

So long as you service it regularly (recommend oil change at 6000 miles) it will go on way past 100K easily. The major ones are the cambelt and tensioners etc. at 60K, which cost me £850, but at least you know it will need nothing big doing for another 60K.

Economy is OK on the motorway, but dire around town (16mpg-ish), but who cares when you've got that noise to listen to. Stick it in 3rd around town at low revs and that throaty burble will keep you smiling ... until you look at the fuel gauge.

Apart from new front wishbone, rear bush, and tyres, I have had no other expenditure in 3 years of happy ownership. OK - it's more to insure and is thirstier than the 2.0 T.S, but I reckon I've saved lots on reliability/no annoying faults.

Handling isn't great, but it's not meant to be an MX-5. This car was built for cruising. You can always buy some decent aftermarket dampers etc. to sharpen it up.

So, forget the M3, Impreza Turbo, TT, and 350Z etc. This car oozes CLASS. Go for it!!!

Agree totally about the engine and handling - have an Alfa 164 with the same 24v V6 and it is a brilliant and reliable gem - have 97,000 miles on the clock.
Handling wise the GTV is a bit of an understeering tourer and here the 164 is miles better - like a big Peugeot 209 GTi, very neutral and well balanced.
Happy motoring :-)
