I purchased the Honda FR-V 2.2 CDTi after needing to replace my ford focus due to the growing family, after looking around at other manufactures I liked the internal design of the FRV, the 6 seats with the cleaver layout and boot size all helped with the decision, having a 2 year old and an 8 month old we still have pushchairs to take with us and other manufactures loose boot space when they have the seating capability of the FRV.
Since owning the car with have had very clunky steering, it has been back twice with no issues found, I have again dropped the car off today (5/08/09) as we have very abnormal tyre were (the outer edge of the tyre is bald but the rest is perfect - the wheel camber is incorrect, linked to the steering issue maybe?) and the steering clunkyness is still an issue.
I have just had a call from the Honda garage to say the steering rack is a known issue and the part is on order (but why was this not found on the previous two visits) will have the car back in 3 days.
After reading the below reply I will also question the tyre replacement, I'm not happy about paying for new tyres when the issue is now a known fault and if rectified on the first visit about 1 year and a half ago then the tyres would not need to be replaced.
I have owned 15 Honda motorcycles and there quality has always been excellent, I'm really disappointed in the FRV and to be honest I would never buy another Honda car again.

Although on face value, the Honda FR-V 2.2 CDT-i is a very practical car and great for passengers who suffer with travel sickness (extra person in front and rear seats being higher than the front giving better vision ahead) its downfall is it's fuel economy. If you drive on long straight roads in 6th gear at 40mph you can achieve figures in the high 40's. If you drive on "normal" roads, stop and start at traffic lights, junctions etc and travel at 60 to 70 mph on the motorways and major roads then expect to achieve 32 to 35 mpg average. I have a school run return every day, then general running about and can only achieve a max average of 32mpg on a diesel.
On a recent long motorway run of 230 miles with no traffic and hold ups or rest stops at a steady speed in 6th gear with cruise control I achieved an average of 34.5mpg when I returned home - VERY DISAPPOINTED. My car has been into the Honda dealer and everything has been checked out and apparently is operating correctly. They took it on a run and achieved the stated mpg as they took it on long straight roads at 30 / 40mph on 60mph roads. I was told to drive very gently, slowly and in as higher gear as possible ( ie 30mph in 6th if poss.) to reach a respectable mpg. I have had numerous diesels and never had to drive like that and still averaged between 45 - 55mpg on a full tank.

I have an FR-V 2.2 ICDT-I Sport and have no problems with it. I get 45 or more on short journeys and 55 on long ones with out having to drive in 6th gear. When doing 30 I drive it in 4th at 30 5th at 40 and 6th at 50 and above. Perhaps you need to listen to you engine more, it will tell you when to change gear. If your in the right gear it purrs and yes it can drink diesel on a motorway, but the motorway speed is only 70 anyway and at that speed mine does 55 to the gallon quite easily.
