    I had purchased this Sansui VRDVD4005 product from Sears approx 7 years ago. Cost was $330.00. It has been great for recording daily shows on a VHS tape and playing movies. I recently began transferring my 8mm home movies onto a DVD using a new DVD recorder in my basement. I am using DVD-R which is compatible with the VRDVD4005 unit. I have finalized the DVD Disc and the Sansui VRDVD4005 will not read the disc. I expected to be able to play my home movies on the other DVD player as well.... (read more)

    Not exactly user friendly. Takes too long to edit.

    5 years old. Very seldom used until appx. 2 months ago when I started recording one one hour program a week and all of a sudden it will not read anymore therefore no longer to record or play previously recorded DVD's. Have tried various versions of DVD's. (read more)

    I have had my Sansui VRDVD4005 for four years and it is just now showing signs of failing. The DVD is repeatedly showing the dreaded "C104" message. I think it may have died at this point but there was no warning. We had watched several commercially produced DVDs on it and then recorded from cable signal. When we tried to go back to playing the mass produced DVD, the "C104" came up. Tried the DVD we had JUST recorded, again it failed to recognize it. Went so far as to insert... (read more)

    I found this review helpful because this is the first time in my long search that someone mentioned a brand of DVD I could try in my VRDVD4500. I love the idea of this unit and am off work on disability--what better time to record all my VHS home movies onto DVDs, right? But--much frustration--thank you!!

    If I had read these reviews before I purchased the Sansui VRDVD4005 I certainly wouldn't have. The vcr works but the dvd has the error C104 saying incorrect disc and I know its the correct disc, looks like we all got stuck with a lemon. I agree with taking it back to sears where I purchased it, but I figure I can purchase a new unit (different brand) cheaper than I could to have it repaired. (read more)

    1. The Sansui VRDVD4005 is a VERY SLOW machine.
    2. Manual is both complicated and yet still lacking, really a lot of trial and error to work the features. Very poorly worded instructions. Setting it up was a task in itself.
    3. Timer recordings never worked right.
    4. One problem after another with this thing, all I can do now is watch VHS tapes with it.

    It worked for a while playing DVD's and recording some stuff, but the difficulty in using this machine took away from it. (read more)

    When my Sansui VRDVD4005 broke, I took it to Sears, who sent it off for repair. The technician called and left a message saying the total cost would be about $335, with the bulk of that being the cost of a new DVD drive. When I finally reached the technician by phone (they don't like to answer the phone at the repair facility), he said that the manufacturers don't want people to repair these machines; they want us to buy new ones. That is why the DVD drives cost so much to replace. To... (read more)

    The quality of the picture and sound on the first home video I transferred from cassette to disc, with my Sansui VRDVD4005, was excellent. Unfortunately, this was the only time I was successful in recording anything onto a disc. The only disc that has worked in the unit so far has been the TDK-RW included in the packaging with the unit. None of the other DVD-R's or DVD-RW's I have purchased have worked. I've owned the unit for 3 years and only successfully recorded onto a DVD once. (read more)

    I had the same problem. No other disk would record except the original one that came with it. I bought another DVD Recorder that records either the -R, -RW, and +R, +RW. When I put the DVD-R disk in it that I bought at Staples, it loads it up fine. Then I take that one to my Sansui VRDVD4005 DVD recorder and format it for DVD VIDEO, SLP, and then I can record on it.
    <br/>
    <br/>Does not make sense to me, but it works. I too have a large supply of DVD-R and DVD-RW to try now.
    <br/>
    <br/>Bummer to go through this process, but I paid too much money for this VRDVD4005 to just throw it away, which is what I was just about to do!

I finally figured out how to transfer my VHS tapes to DVD's after discovering that I need specific types of DVD-RW discs. Unfortunately they will only playback in that machine. They do not work in any other DVD players. Anyone have any ideas or solutions? It would be greatly appreciated!

    Fair indeed! Sears should be ashamed for keeping this unit on the shelves when there are so many units being returned right and left. I'm writing to confirm that I experienced these same issues and more with three (3) different units of this same box. Listen to what this reviewer says, and to what all other reviewers have to say who experienced problems with this unit. These problems are not isolated or due to the inability of the owner to use the unit. This product has serious flaws and issues (be sure to read my reviews). This producty is only offered through Sears and should be pulled from the shelves immediately.

    To the reviewer who wrote that one must have some native intelligence to run the Sansui VRDVD4005, and that it has a long manual written 'in English' I must say that what is wrong with this 'complex' machine isn't always the operator. <br>Well, I just finished my third and final box on this model.
    <br>
    <br>I shipped the 2nd one to Sears repair service and they bench tested and verified that the box was malfunctioning (pause feature didn't work). I found lots more wrong with it than they did, but I was satisfied that they found something that didn't work right.
    <br>
    <br>I immediately turned around and picked up box number 3, took it home, and guess what? It was also a lemon, and THIS time, I called the repair guy direct and we walked it through the paces over the phone.
    <br>
    <br>If you don't believe me, call the repair tech yourself. Ray at 909-972-7200 ext 311. Refer to service order 99166991
    <br>
    <br>My STRONG advice is, if you're thinking about getting one of these units, RUN the other way. A problem with one box, I could dismiss as an anomaly. I like the box so much I decided to get a second one. Who knows what insanity prompted me to get it a 3rd time. Probably just curiousity. Could this product really be THAT BAD? I wondered. And I got my answer.

    <br> <br>Maybe this will help. You say you "cannot dub with the dvd+r or the dvdrw's".
    <br>
    <br>The Sansui will only record in DVD-R and DVD-RW formats. If you are using a DVD+R disc it won't work. Buy some DVD-R discs ands try them. Also, don't waste your money on DVD-RW discs. DVD-R's are so inexpensive, it's chaeaper to make a new recording with a new DVD-R disc than to erase and reuse a DVD-RW.

Listen to what this reviewer says, and to what all other reviewers have to say who experienced problems with this unit. These problems are not isolated or due to the inability of the owner to use the unit. This product has serious flaws and issues (be sure to read my reviews)

    I've had my vrdvd4005 unit for some time now and have not experienced any of the problems you're referring to. Are you getting the errors when doing multi-session recording for DVD-Rs? or DVD-RWs?
    <br>
    <br>I have not tried doing multi-session recording for DVD-Rs on the 4005. Since DVD-Rs are right once only, I use them for movies or tranferring video only. I use DVD-RW's for recording TV shows and the like. I've never had a problem with multi-session recording on DVD-RWs. I use the Fuji Film brand of DVD-RWs (1x-2x).
    <br>
    <br>Also, I saw that you've tried several brands of disks. However, they recommend you not use anything higher than 2x speed disks. The Fuji's I use are 1x-2x for DVD-RW. I've successfully used both Fuji DVD-R (up to 2x) and Sony DVD-R (1x-4x).
    <br>
    <br>For this unit, when you buy recordable disks higher than 2x, make sure the package says something like "1x-4x" compatibility and NOT just "4x" alone.
    <br>
    <br>Hope this helps.

    First of all, thank you all for commenting on my dilemma with the Sansui 4005 deck. Here's an update on my case. I went to have it serviced, since I had some warranty still on it. The tech phoned me & said it came from the factory with a faulty DVD mechanism & I could pick up a brand new one at Sears, since it was no fault of mine, which I did. I kept the new one a week & found it would not complete the finalizing on many discs, & had similiar timer & processing problems, so again the discs had to be disposed of, because half completed finalization makes the discs totally unreadable. I called Sears again & spoke with a knowledgeable salesman. He said those machines are consistent with their malfunctioning occurrances & I could exchange it again, and may luckily get a rare machine that functions properly but he recommended I pay the $100.00 or so difference, (as he had done) and get either a JVC or Panasonic, which are both remarkably dependable and not a constant gamble. I did so & glad I did. It takes a bit more time to go through the instructions & initial setup but the few occasions I tried it, there were no probs - even when using the timer. The door drawer that holds the dvd's is much less flimsy & it goes from DVD to VHS mode & back instantly, when pressing the remote. Overall it appears generally well constructed.
    <br>One thing that's odd (JVC) is there's no DVD eject on the remote. Hope everyone else has better luck than I had with the Sansui.

    Glad you're happy with the other unit Mohuncher. I must have one of the few "good" Sansui units. Like I said earlier...I've had no problems with mine yet.
    <br>I have, however, figured out that multi-session recording with DVD-Rs doesn't always work. This doesn't bother me particularly much because I use DVD-R's only when recording movies from cable (from Showtime or Encore, so there's no commercials) or for dubbing VCR/camcorder tapes. If I am going to dub multiple tapes to one DVD or if I'm taping a TV series, I use the DVD-RWs, and have not had a problem yet.

    One other note about finalizing on the Sansui unit is that, while it may seem like it's not working, it sometimes takes the unit more than 5 minutes to finalize a disc. This can be very annoying, but in the end it does do the finalization...you just have to be patient and wait for it. I thought at first that my unit had problems, but I waited and when it finally did complete the finalization, the discs worked fine on my unit and other other brands of DVD players.
    <br>
    <br>A point of interest is that the DVD recorder unit inside the Sansui is really a Pioneer DVD recorder...I believe it's the A10 model or something like that. It's surprising that so many Sansui units have problems with their DVD drives since Pioneer usually makes a pretty good product. Oh well, just wanted to point that out to those who may be interested.

    AnwerKeval (and all):
    <br>I have several times recorded every last minute of video to DVD-Rs on the vrdvd4005. In actual practice, the SP (2 hr) mode can actually record up to 2 hrs, 8 min, 58 second of video. I know this because I recorded a movie from cable that was close to 2 hrs and 10 min long. I was able to get the entire movie, less some of the ending credits.
    <br>
    <br>I've also used the OTR function to record a movie (set for 3:00 hrs on SP (2hr) mode) so that the movie would fully record if I fell asleep watching it. I've done this a few times and have both finalized the disc in the morning when waking up or finalized it later when I get the time to do it.
    <br>
    <br>In all cases I've had no problems finalizing the discs. Sometimes the finalization process seems to take a longer than usual time to complete (5 or more minutes), but it has always finished successfully for me.
    <br>
    <br>I use Sony 1x-4x DVD-R and FujiFilm 1x-2x DVD-R discs. I also use FujiFilm 1x-2x DVD-RW discs, but have not yet filled one to capacity before finalizing.
    <br>
    <br>You might try using the discs I've mentioned above or try waiting a little longer for finalization to finish (if you haven't already done this).

    After all the difficulty this owner relates here, it is amazing to me that they give this unit a 'recommended' status.
    <br>
    <br>The issues are not just the type of media used with this unit (although it IS a minor issue). TDK media works best on these units, but none of that will overcome the clear issues that are associated with this unit.

    Unfortunately, reviewing this unit after one week or even one month is not enough time to 'burn in' the unit. And, occasional use will not reveal the issues associated with it. If you'll read other reviews you will notice several consistent comments about the unreliability of this unit over time. I myself had go through 3 different units within 6 mos before finally giving up. Having said this, some units may indeed perform well, but those seem to be the exception and not the rule.
    <br>
    <br>This model is fraught with far too many problems to deserve a good rating (see my reviews, and the reviews of others). The problems reported by others are not isolated anomalies - they are indicators of chronic issues with this unit. The issues with this unit have nothing to do with using the incorrect dvds (I didn't) or offbrand DVD's (I didn't) nor do them stem from a failure of the owner's inability to comprehend how to use this unit.
    <br>
    <br>Whereas this is a complex unit to operate, even the Sears repair center agreed with me that the unit does not function well.

    Kwirth, much as I like my unit, I have to agree with you. A good friend of mine purchased the Sansui unit a few months after I did and he got a bad one. Instead of trying another Sansui, he went out and got a similar type unit made by Zenith.
    <br>
    <br>What I've read and experienced about the Sansui seems to be true...there are a few good units (I'm lucky to have one of them), but there seem to be many more bad ones.
    <br>
    <br>I've had mine for quite some time now (so it's been well "burned in") and have never had any problems. The recording quality continues to be very good on the XP/SP modes and acceptable on the LP mode. Also, since my original review, I have made many video transfers of home movies from VHS to DVD. I've been happy with the quality of the transfers.
    <br>
    <br>Anyway, although I'm happy with my unit, it appears that buying the Sansui is a situation of "buyer beware"...you may be blessed with a good unit (like myself) or get stuck with a lemon (like my friend). If you can get one with a decent warranty period (at least 30-45 days), then I think it's worth trying...assuming you get a good deal price-wise. Otherwise, I would look elsewhere first.
    <br>
    <br>Thanks, electrcblu

    I purchased my VRDVD4005 about 2 months ago. I am very happy with the unit so far. Picture quality even in the longest record mode for both tape and DVD is very good.
    <br>
    <br>I have used only TDK -R/-RW discs because the unit came with a TDK brand DVD-RW and because of the problems reported in this review with other brands I decided to stick with only TDK.
    <br>
    <br>For DWolf who said he purchased his unit from Sears' clearance rack and got no owner's manual, let me HIGHLY recommend getting a copy. It's 86 pages long (just in English, not multiple languages) and there's a lot of info in it. This is a very sophisticated product and the manual contains stuff that you probably could not figure out without it. You really need this manual! Its P/N is J2D30101A.
    <br>
    <br>I've been thinking of plugging this unit into a UPS (uninterruptable power supply) partly to filter the power line, but also to make sure of having power to the unit during a power outage. I live in Minnesota, USA and we get a lot of spring storms here. Is there any problem with doing this?
    <br>
    <br>I would like to eventually get a dual bay DVD recorder to dub disc to disc with a built-in hard drive (at least 80 - 200 GB) as a temporary storage. All in one box. Is this kind of product going to be offered any time soon? If not soon, when then? This would be handy for transfering from an RW to an R disc, for example. Or for making duplicate discs.

    Coastwiseguy, if you are recording from the tv and only want to be able to play them ont the Sansui player you can choose the recorder speed in the dvd setup. I think it is sp for the slowest but don't hold me to that. Anyway, it works just like a vcr you have 3 recording speeds and the slowest gets you 6 hours of record time. This video compression will probably make the video incompatable with other players.

    I bought this Sansui VRDVD4005 DVD Recorder not very long ago from Ebay. So far I could record VHS tape only. I already wasted 4 DVD-R brand name and generic. I don't know why when first recorded 1 song to see if it worked or not. It worked but I keep recorded a couple hours; the disk could not play back. I tried DVD-RW, this unit formated 1/2 way done and froze I have to unplug the unit. (read more)

    I have had problems using the dubbing feature with the Sansui VRDVD4005 DVD Recorder(VHS to DVD) where I am using my own camcorder VHS recordings (no copyright) and receive the error message C254-Cannot Copy Data. I know what the manual says, but the source tape is not copyrighted! On one occasion, the error message was received about 30 minutes into the recording, and on other occasions the error is received very quickly after starting the dubbing. I recorded on the DVD-R that came with the Sansui VRDVD4005 DVD Recorder with no problem. I noticed that you could edit nothing but the name of the disc, although the disc worked fine in other DVD players. I tried changing the format from video and recording to to DVD-R, but it wouldn't play back on a standard DVD player. I tried both formats on a DVD-RW, and neither would play back on a standard DVD player (or computer). I then changed it back to video mode and tried again to the DVD-R.... (read more)

    You must be recording in video mode...not vr. And you must finalize the disk before you can play it on a standard dvd player. If your player will read -rw then you can finalize it and also un-finalize it to erase and record another program.

    If you do not record in video mode, you cannot play the DVD in most standard DVD players. Which is stupid, because you can only edit in VR mode. Of course, you must finalize it to play in other players. I finalize all my discs, however about a third gives me an error on finalizing and I have to unplug it to reset it. I have wasted many discs and do not know why. I do not use RW's, because I noticed after finalizing, they will only play in a very few systems - they will not even play in my PC DVDROM.
    <br>From what I can tell, to record a disc to play in a standard DVD player, you must record in video, which you cannot edit, rename or format in any way, other than changing the name of the disc.

    i have the same item, and i have not had any problems when recording on a dvd-rw. one thing i did notice when i initialized my first dvd-rw is that the machine automatically formatted the disc in vr mode. since the manual indicated that dvds recorded in vr mode may not play in other dvd players, i immediately reformatted the dvd-rw in video mode. this can be accomplished by inserting the dvd-rw in the machine, hitting setup on the remote, then selecting system setup, then selecting disc, then arrow down to reformat in video mode and hit select. be forewarned that reformatting a dvd-rw from vr mode to video mode will erase any material stored on it. i don't know if this will resolve the problems you've been having with regard to limited recording time, but it might.

With DVD-R (generic) my recorder did not work very well either it's alway skipping. I have wasted 4 DVD-R (brand name) because when I recorded first few songs, it worked. But when I continued backing up the whole DVD; it did not work at all. I don't know why? Any suggestion would be appreciated.

    Hey - if you work for Sears, then please tell them to come to this site and read all the friggin reviews on this unit that are posted here.
    <br>
    <br>Sears should definitely remove this unit from stock alltogether
    <br>
    <br>You said:
    <br>"I can't figure out why it won't record past 2hrs sometimes"
    <br>
    <br>I had the exact same issue you did - only for me - it would n-e-v-e-r record more than 2 hrs in any mode, and yes, I was using the correctly formatted DVDs.
    <br>
    <br>This unit has serious issues and is a piece of garbage.
    <br>
    <br>What's even worse is... every time I brought in a unit, the Sears sales person immediately discounted it with a 'clearance' price and placed it back on the shelf for sale.
    <br>
    <br>Incredible...

    For those of you having trouble recording past 2hrs on either dvd-r or dvd-rw, I just have to ask: have you checked to make sure you set the recording speed to slp? are you using dvd media that are compatible with multiple record speeds, i.e. 2x, 4x, etc.? You need 4x dvds in order to have the full range of recording speeds available--xp, sp, lp and slp--and you have to set the record speed before you begin recording. I'm sure that's pretty obvious to most of you, but who knows, maybe it's something simple like that. The button on the remote control for setting the recording speed is directly to the right of the record button, so perhaps you may have accidently changed the record speed before beginning recording?
    <br>
    <br>Again, I have had this dvd recorder for over a year now, and I have not had any problems with the machine. I've created a couple of coasters, sure, but that was a result of my own error.
    <br>
    <br>Another thing folks could try, partiucularly if you've had a recent power outtage, is to unplug the unit for a minute, then plug it back in. That resets the machine and could remedy your problems.

    Re: dbfactor's comment on 2/16 - yes of course I used it in SLP mode...WHEN THE SYSTEM WOULD LET ME GO THERE! That's also part of the problem with the units I had - in the end they would lock up and not even let me select many of the functions. But yes - of course I used the correct media and settings. Like I've stated on other reviews re this product: SOME units seem to work for their owners just fine, but MANY of them simply don't. If yours works as it should, that's really great and I'm happy for you.
    <br>
    <br>Keep in mind that Sears repair examined and tested 2 of my units and found that they didn't work. These are the folks who are supposed to know if I'm full of beans or not. In their opinion, my units were flawed.
    <br>
    <br>Here's the icing on the cake.
    <br>
    <br>The day that I posted my last comment here (also the day I returned my third unit to Sears for the last time), I FINALLY made contact via email with someone at Sansui who said that they KNEW about this review site. So I asked the obvious question..."then WHY haven't YOU posted a comment here so we can all get in touch with you?"
    <br>
    <br>I got no response.
    <br>
    <br>This person also said it was Sears' fault for not publishing contact info clearly and conspicuously on the manual they supplied with the unit. Sansui is playing the blame game.
    <br>
    <br>This is about as bad as it gets for a lemon product.

I have had no problem using this unit. I do not have a manual and still have no problems. As to your specific issue the only thing I can say is make sure that the recorder is in slow mode before you put the DVD in to format it. I just recorded the super bowl onto a Maxell 4x DVD-r with no problems. Everyone please make absolutely sure that you NEVER put a DVD+R in this unit. It can and will cause big problems. I know two people who put a dvd+r in their unit because the Sears salesperson told them it was the right DVD and it caused the machine to malfunction.

    Yes I had the same problem and had to send the unit back for repair two times in less than a month. The first time they sent it back stating they could not duplicate the problem. The second time I sent the player in it was damaged during transport and they replaced it. I had sent in a package of Memorex DVD-rw\'s that I had purchased from sears that would not initialize. I got the package of DVD\'s back in the mail a couple of weeks later with a note saying that they were not compatible with my unit and that I should buy TDK\'s. Go figure why they would be selling them in their stores.
    <br>I had received the player as a gift from my wife for Christmas, so it had only been in use since the 25th, but purchased on the 4th of December. The 90 day warranty started on the 4th. Lets just say it\'s been a small nightmare dealing with SEARS and the Sears repair center in Illinois. When I got the replacement DVD I purchased the extended warranty feeling that other problems would surface in the future.

    I just purchased the Sansui on eBay a couple weeks ago and have been using it for a week and a half now (20 March 2004).
    <br>
    <br>As for the media; it's not strange problem. I've also had no luck with Memorex (which IS definitely considered to be one of the better brands in the industry...I've worked with computers for over 25 years and have built and serviced more machines than I can count).
    <br>
    <br>I spoke to a Memorex rep. and she said that most current Pioneer DVD drives have a proprietary way of initializing R and RW DVD blanks disks and it has been a problem since Pioneer introduced the current line of drives. They always worked in the older drives without a problem (something I found to be true from experience at several companies using different brand machines but all with older Pioneer drives--no problems).
    <br>
    <br>Before purchasing the Sansui I e-mailed them many times with questions since the DVD media seems to come up on every message and usenet group board. They stated that the drive in this recorder has been tested and found to work with TDK, Princo and OPTODISC 1x and 2X DVD-R and -RW MEDIA. They also stressed that while the manual states not to go over 4x media, the media that seemed to work the best was 2x.

    <br>I have a Toshiba DVD-RW writer in my computer and had purchased a bulk lot of 100 generic RWs from Shop4tech.com and these no-name disks actually work fine in my Sansui!!--and in a bulk lot of 100 cost 78 cents (US dollars or in this case cents). And the plain -Rs were 59 cents each in bult lots of 100. So try the brands Sansui tested and try a few generics; you might save a lot of money.
