“I bought the Nextbase SDV17-A 3 weeks ago to watch...”

★★★★☆

written by simes69 on 15/01/2005

I bought the Nextbase SDV17-A 3 weeks ago to watch films on my weekly commute on the Eurostar and I am very pleased with it. I think the tablet design is very stylish.
The screen is not as high a resolution as I had hoped but it is more than adequate for the task. It can sometimes struggle with displaying sufficient contrast, subtle hues or rapid movement, but I think that is to be expected. (I am watching it as I type this review!).
The sound from the stereo speakers at the front is, of course, woeful, but as each one is only 1cm across they're more for show than anything else. Plugging a decent set of headphones into the port on the side brings the desired results however. The volume is the only thing item omitted from an otherwise comprehensive remote control, but I can understand the cost implications of adding it - the volume pot' comes on a DVD drive as standard so one might as well use it. Otherwise the remote provides all of the functionality you would get from a full-sized DVD player.
The battery bolts securely on to the bottom of the unit and adds about 20% to it's height and weight. The "leg" at the rear props the screen to the correct angle and is adjustable for use either with or without the battery.
The unit can be connected to an external screen or speakers or both, and the necessary wiring comes in it's own zipped bag for storage. This will also carry the mains adaptor which you will need to recharge the battery every 3 hours. The unit can run directly from the mains, of course.
A soft case is provided, into which you can fit the unit, the battery and the remote control. A couple of stitched pockets in the case would have been a nice feature to keep discs in.
Also provided are a set of straps which can be used to hang the player over a car seat, although I have not tried them.
The unit can play both audio CD and DVD Video. Support for Video CD and/or Photo CD would have been a thoughtful addition, as the design of the Nextbase would definitely lend itself to being used as a portable photograph album.

“Bought my Nextbase SDV17-A Tablet about 2 months ago....”

★★★★★

written by Bauer on 16/08/2004

Bought my Nextbase SDV17-A Tablet about 2 months ago. I bought it especially for my trip to the USA (to watch on the plane and train journeys), and what an excellent buy it turned out to be! I am a big fan of the TV show 24, and I recorded all of the 3rd season onto DVD-R's.. I managed to watch around 5-6 episodes (which including adverts are 1hr long each) before the battery finally ran out- I was very impressed, as I'd read prior to buying it that the battery life was 3-4 hours.

This player can play pretty much anything you chuck at it, its multi-region and about the only formats I've found it doesn't play are DVD+R's and DVD-RAM.
I'd say my only gripe is that you have to be Kinda careful with the screen, as obviously unlike the 'laptop' style players there's nothing really to protect it properly.... but apparently the screen has a special protective coating which (so far so good) has prevented mine from any scratches etc.
All in all, I'm very impressed with mine and would recommend it to anyone.. it was fairly cheap too- I bought mine from Gadgetshop.co.uk for £250, which compared to what you'd have paid not so long ago is very reasonable indeed!

“I bought three Nextbase SDV17-A Tablets from...”

★☆☆☆☆

I bought three Nextbase SDV17-A Tablets from pnttrading in Surrey UK and all three had faulty pictures where there would be a glaring pixel out on the screen which was either bright red or bright green.

Also the player has reading problems where if the disc has even a microfibre on the surface the picture screws up and the player crashes.

I would not recommend this player, I just bought a panasonic SL-50 for £30 more which is FAR superior in every respect and with a folding screen so it can transform into a tablet player anyway.

Avoid.

“Ok ladies and gents, here's something we've needed for...”

Ok ladies and gents, here's something we've needed for a looong time. The Nextbase SDV17-A Tablet DVD Player is a portable DVD player in the form of a tablet. It's compatible with practically everything, has an optional Lithium Ion battery that lasts about 3 hours, looks great and is quick too.
It has nice options like being able to watch the picture upside down, brightness controls, etc. It has a nice remote control that comes with it that's about the size of a credit card. It also has a nice case that comes with it, all the needed cables (RCA, AC, etc.) as well as a separate case for the cables!
What I really like about this the most is the way it looks and the feel of the system. It's not heavy and is very smooth in texture. I travel a lot so it's perfect for me, especially considering the fact that it doesn't have to flip open. I've had it so far for a few weeks, I can't find anything wrong or think of any downsides yet, so...
I got my mine from Merconnet cause I'm in Canada. I can't find anyone else that has it elsewhere yet in North America, and they sell worldwide. The price was pretty good in comparison to flip open portable DVD's.
