Good Points: Attractive classic design; Top of the line German construction; low recoil; very reliable; very accurate for a .45.
Bad Points: Expensive compared to most other popular handguns; magazine release located at the base of the trigger guard is not as easy to use as it could be.
General comments: The Heckler & Koch USP line of handguns is popular with those willing to spend a little more (typically $800-$1000 US) for the superior quality (compare that to around $500 for a typical Glock).
Like Glock, this handgun is highly reliable with an ultra low failure rate (i.e. misfires or failure for magazine to slide back upon last fired round).
I tested three handguns at a local firing range recently, using 100 rounds each to get an idea of what handgun I might purchase.
I was told that Glocks and Sigs are quite accurate, but when test firing the H&K I found it superior to the Glock 23 (.40S&W) and the Sig Arms P229 (9mm) in this regard.
Recoil of the H&K .45 was similar to the Clock .40 S&W, and slighly less than the Sig 9mm.
(One item of note is that the Sig P229 did fail to retract the slide once upon emptying the magazine. This may or may not have been an issue due to cleaning and maintenance, but it is true that even some new handguns have similar failures, i.e. the Walther P99).
All in all I was very impressed with the H&K USP, and I am in a quandry over spending $500 for a good handgun or $1000 for a great one.
I would appreciate it if anyone out there has compared handguns and found a high quality handgun that sells for $600 or less.
