Good Points: Brilliant styling inside and out. Very comfortable ride. With good winter tires (uniroyal) I've been extremely pleased with it as a family car in the snow. Excellent boot space, rear seat space, and legroom. I have the 2 liter and it makes a lovely vroom-vroom sound. Owned it for three years and I plan on keeping it for a while longer.

Bad Points: As usual, the electrical system has some minor problems. Power locks went on strike one day. Retractable mirrors sometimes don't retract and then, the next day, they do. Can't find the pattern. The 2 liter should get significantly better milage than the 3.0 but seems only fairly better according to other reviews I've read. Wish the rear seats folded down, but with a wife and baby I'm still very pleased by the space.

General comments: I decided on the Alfa Romeo 166 over the BMW 5 series and Audi A4 and A6. Also consider the Saab 9-3 which is nice looking, but soulless to drive. I bought the car used with 89,000 KM and I've been very pleased. I concede that the interiors of the German cars feel a bit "tighter" than the Alfa, and the 2.0 is a wee bit under powered, but the Alfa's cockpit is one of the most underrated interiors of the last 10 years. Everything about it feels good. I'm happy being in it. I love the feel of the car. Everyone -- from colleagues to mother-in-law -- feels special inside it. It's the kind of feeling one might get from a very, very expensive automobile (Maserati, etc), but as a used car, the 166 is an excellent decision. The main reasons to avoid it -- including depreciation -- are mainly irrelevant by the time the car is 5 years old. It's already bottomed out. For the price of a used one, there is nothing that comes close.
