“Disappointing leader support”

★★★☆☆

written by Alanak470 on 20/02/2023

I have been with SW for about 7 months being successful by following the science plan. More recently I developed a medical condition so asked my group leader about foods to support it- I was met with a turse any foods without the F symbol might be ok! really! well hey I did my science and no not all without the F symbol are ok at all.... I then asked about the weeks I have in credit ( as I couldn't go to group as too unwell.....x2 messages later still no response Is it all about the money and bums on seats ???? caring isn't there for sure

I joined some weeks back and had to miss a week because if sickness when i went the following week they asked for 2 weeks money, not wishing to cause a scene i paid but on checking the terms and conditions i was unable to find this in there. i have asked SW for clarification but as yet i have not had a reply. the following week i asked about this and was told that i am allowed 6 weeks holiday a year and that i have to inform them of these, i think not i am not telling a stranger when my house is empty, might as well put a sign on the door telling all and sundry. needless to say i have not been back paying £4.65 to get weighed is too expensive.

“Best thing we ever did”

★★★★★

written by on 19/06/2017

My husband and I were morbidly obese and after trying every fad diet you could think of, we went to ask our GP for help. She steered us to Slimming World and we have had excellent results. I have lost 3 stones in 5 months and my hubby 5. We get weighed discretely every week, no one ever knows your weight. If we lose we get a big clap from everyone and if we gain, tremendous support. The body imaging talk is our favourite. Lots of tips, lots of laughs, lots of encouragement. I feel that each group is as good as its leader. So if you have a bad one, don't give up, look for a better group. Heck! Where else would you learn to make syn free chips(fries)

“Rude Leaders and Weighers ”

★★☆☆☆

written by AngelinaMooney on 05/06/2017

On two separate occasions I joined Slimming World both of them ended in failure. The first time I joined I had a leader that was very rude to me by saying that members complained about my two children being noisy and untidy albeit they were babies at the time, I walked out in disgust vowing never to return. Second occasion I tried a different meting but found that hard to get to but the leader I had was very nice, I went to a different SW meeting one in my area, and one of the weighers took great pleasure in humiliating me in front of everybody in a quite a rude way by saying I had put on a lot of weight, walked out in disgust vowing never to return to SW again after that nasty experience.

“Fired for having Heart Attack”

★★☆☆☆

written by DravenPhillips3 on 27/02/2017

Totally unethical company to work for, I'd joined the company some 6 months prior to my heart attack. The day I came out of my angiogram surgery, my line manager called me to say 'we accept your verbal resignation' which is a lie, as I'd not resigned. Having been with them less than 2 years my rights were reduced to a point I had no choice but to accept it. I urge you all to avoid this companies products and services as a stand against their unethical behaviours.

When I asked for new food diaries after two weeks I was amazed at how hard it was to obtain one, they go on about how important it is to keep a dairy but when you need one they just don't want to give you one. I thought our weekly payments were towards these, but it appears not.

“Slimmer of the weak”

★★★☆☆

written by Clarity47 on 10/09/2016

It's basically a nutritional plan commercially marketed trying to lock you in. I was disappointed, took me courage to go along to the group in the first place , friendly enough leader but explanation of how it all worked in terms of membership was non existent. Lovely group ... but weekly talks were patronising and sometimes infantile and a thinly veiled telling off when people had got terms etc. wrong. I have not got a lot of weight to loose so there was a bit of the why are you here vibe and no guidance as to what my target should be. When I asked for explanation as to why you shouldn't weigh yourself between session or one week I had put on a pound (despite working out hard and probably amassing muscle weight) answers given were unscientific and not credible I.e are you eating grapes? Benefits were I did loose weight and ditched my stress eating habit but I have lost more weight since bailing out of slimming world. I also detest referring to any food as sins despite the spelling variation. Loving my fitness pal app as it looks at your overall nutrition and exercise as an individual and doesn't make you do quizzes where you get extra points for mentioning you would take cutlery to a picnic!

“Stupid Criteria”

★☆☆☆☆

written by suWaddell144 on 14/08/2016

At he moment the Woman of the Year has just been nominated in each group, what a joke. Apparently the criteria is you have to have lost 4 stone or above, so god help those that only have 1 or 2 stone to lose you have no chance of being nominated! The same applies to slimmer of the week unless you have a lot to lose and drop big numbers you have no chance of getting the basket of goodies, which may I add is provided by the members contributions, joke. The classes are so boring and its like being in school where the teacher has her favorites, and its these she focuses on week in week out, they actually take the class in the end. None of the leaders appear to be at target and don't seem very well trained as they can never answer your questions. Save your money and go it alone you have more chance of losing

After a weight gain and lifestyle change I decided to try slimming world after seeing a couple of acquaintances loose weight and look good O do these classes really exist in this day and age The plan and booklets are very complicated but I can see it working once one understands it I received an initial warm welcome but the greasy haired muffin topped consultant belonged to a world where I do not The team of helpers were astonishing..... words fail me The venue was set out like something from call the mid wife and 'old member's talked all the way through the lecture which consisted of going round discussing each member's weight loss What Peter Kay jolked about 6 years ago Still armed with my encyclopedia of all foodstuffs known to woman off I went after signing up for 3 months The website is also complicated When I called the consultant she really couldn't get me off the phone quick enough I went to my second meeting all excited and after signing in with the patronising clerk I then moved on to the weigh clerk with shaved head no makeup wearing a black vest and no smile She informed be with robotic monotone that I just stayed the same I left I had a text conversation with the consultant and we arranged to speak Tuesday night..... Guess what she didn't call I feel it is not for me Out of date Out of fashion Out of touch

written by Abernathy1969 on 27/05/2016

Went to my first slimming world recipe tasting last night, both me and my friend went to the bother of making something to take. The leader had brought a dish in and no one else in the whole meeting brought anything with them. Very embarrassing and was annoyed that over 50-60 people came in and got weighed and about 30 stopped for the meeting!!! We were all told last week but I think the leader could have emailed or sent a text reminder. When this was done at weight watchers everyone participated, don't know if I want to go back now.

I agree I joined a class it was far too busy. The class leader I think her name was Pamela took myself and another new member into a corner and rushed through what you do. Her eyes were all over the class trying to see what the people who were helping her were doing. Then we had to wait about twenty mins to get weighed, I asked her if they had a book of meals for one she wasn't sure but said she would get me one for next week I found the whole think rushed and the four weeks i went I lost only four pounds.I joined this class because it was so near to my house but left and went to Scottish Slimmers much more relaxed and more helpful

“Good Plan, Awful Group Meetings”

★★☆☆☆

written by BlahBlah456 on 13/05/2016

The plan is good providing you like a variety of fruit and vegetables and it's pretty easy to follow, it may take a few weeks to really get your head around what you need to do but if you have the time to make meal plans you'll get on well with it. The groups, on the other hand, are simply awful. People inevitably turn up early but you are not allowed to be weighed until the exact time the group is meant to start meaning that if you're staying for the 'Image Therapy' you'll have a very long wait whilst the volunteers get everyone through the payment and weigh-in. The 'Image Therapy' is very lengthy, extremely boring and rarely useful. The consultant will go through every single person in the group and talk about their week whether it's a loss or a gain; most of the people that stay do so every week so you hear the same thing every time. I did Weight Watchers years ago and the consultant would talk to a handful of people regarding their loss/gain and then the rest of the meeting would be tips, useful information, recipe sharing and even the occasional cooking session. You'll also find that most of the groups have their little cliques who the consultant will spend a lot of time talking to then if you have something to say, you get approximately a minute to share. It seems that the consultants have little or no training and half of them haven't hit target or are even close to hitting it. Surely a diet consultant should be able to show that the diet works?? Even though you're paying £4.95 per week to stand on some scales and listen to a completely uninteresting and useless meeting you get nothing for it; the 'Lifeline Online' has a few good aspects but it needs a serious update. A couple of areas get updated once a week but other than that it seems that it's all the same thing. Even the prizes given out to the 'Slimmer of the Week' are usually 'Free Foods' that the other members have brought it. You also have to book holidays, whether this is due to work, illness, an actual holiday or you know you've had a bad week so don't want to waste the money. If you happen to forget to contact your consultant, the following week you have to pay double! If I decide to not go to group for 1 week, the only person that affects is me! Overall, it becomes boring. Slimming World need to seriously think about updating their rules, the group structure and the membership...surely you should get something more for being a member than just having the privilege to stand on the slimming world scales!

“s,world support your consultant,s”

★★☆☆☆

written by Davenport105 on 26/03/2016

My consultant has changed several times in the year I have been a member. Slimming world need,s to give them better support. Some would be good. They don't care for their consultant,s. Which mean's they don't care about us member,s. I know the class has to follow guidelines. But there need,s to be some lee way to suit the members in each class. As we are not at school and do have mind,s of our own. WAKE UP SLIMMING WORLD BEFORE IT,S TO LATE. AND YOUR MEMBERS MOVE ELSEWHERE AS THEY ARE ALREADY DOING. BACK YOUR CONSULTANT,S.

“Leaders need to be retrained”

★★☆☆☆

written by Saniyah135 on 18/03/2016

The plan itself is really good although it does take a while to understand everything, it would be useful if the leaders spent more time explaining it to the members not just rushing through it. The overall class itself is boring, constantly going round each member and clapping for every result whether good or bad, but, never explaining especially to new members how to make the plan work or where they may be going wrong, just allowing other members to do the work for them by answering questions. I find the leader at my group tends to have her favourites and spends a lot of time letting them speak but skips over everyone else. She never gives any useful advice just says let me have a food diary, but, yet again doesn't get back to the person with any constructive criticism. Why can't they spend the time answering queries rather than the pointless exercise of clapping each member? I think this is why a lot don't stay to class, they get nothing from it. What also annoys me and others is if a person can't stay and they are the slimmer of the week they don't even get the certificate the following week, why? They have paid there fee like everyone else. Perhaps if SW sent undercover members to check out clubs and how they perform they may get a better picture of what annoys members. When the leader knows the area manager is coming her attitude is completely different thereby giving a false impression. Overall I would not recommend the Ramsbottom class it is too much of a clique.

“Expensive and a lot of work”

★★☆☆☆

written by Holmesjm248 on 15/11/2015

Success on this plan really depends upon how committed you are to sticking to an eating plan that revolves around endless amounts of mushrooms, eggs, carrots and peppers. Those are the basic foods you will find yourself consuming by week 3-4 because they are cheap and easy to source. Okay, so people do stick to it and lose weight but variety is the spice of life and you will find yourself becoming bored with coming up with ways of presenting these 'speed' foods in new and interesting ways. So you find yourself branching out and searching for more exotic fruits and vegies to make things interesting and that's when it becomes expensive and you'll find you're buying and cooking things that the rest of the family wont touch with a barge pole. It's fine if you're single or a couple with no kids, but having to buy a separate order of food items along with the family shopping is hard to budget in. Pasta is 'free' so if you feel comfortable having consumed a mountain of pasta during the day then you wont feel hungry but I found it tummy-bloating to say the least. You can only have 2 slices of bread from a small loaf a day, or two weetbix or a tiny 30gms of approved cereal - leaves you feeling parched. Very small amount of milk allowed which I feel is not good for women of childbearing age. I've not met anyone to date who has kept the weight off for too long after achieving their target. It's basically too much protein and too few carbs to sustain this for a lifetime.

“Good Choice”

★★★★★

written by 61Medina on 29/09/2015

I had struggled with my weight for many years. So I decided to join a slimming club, however it got very boring after a few months and I gave up. Things went from bad to worse and I just found it impossible to do this alone. So in August this year I joined Slimming World. The group leader explained how the plan worked ( she did speak rather fast though, she needed to slow down and it would have been better if she had found a quiet room as there was rather a lot of background noise as families with young children were present). So far I have lost almost half a stone but am determined to keep going and reach my goal weight. I am glad I made the right choice!!

“Am a returning member - not noticing any improvements.”

★★★☆☆

written by VivianaMcGraw194 on 15/09/2015

The classes can be very boring if the consultant puts no effort into the 'Image Therapy' session. Just listening to a roomful of other people account for their losses or gains can wear thin after a couple of weeks. I am losing weight but have had to break some rules along the way. This is because I feel the severe restrictions on bread and cereals to be not only unnecessary but harmful in the long term. You have to choose between a daily allowance of a paltry 30gms (less than a handful) of 'approved' breakfast cereal or two slices of wholemeal bread (from a small loaf). If you have cereal then you cannot have any bread or if you do then you have to count it as Syns - and you are allowed 15 Syns a day. No, you don't count calories but you DO count Syns or you'll be in trouble. Milk too is severely restricted - 250mls a day of semi-skimmed, not really advisable for women. I upped my intake to 4 slices of wholemeal bread with low fat spread a day as well as 2 weetbix in the morning and am still losing weight. So you dont have to leave out bread so much. If you look at the Heart Foundation's website you will see that wholemeal bread does not have to be restricted to one or two slices a day and you can take it even if you have your weetbix in the morning. Watch your fruit intake - fruit is loaded with fructose (sugar) so eating piles of fruit a day as suggested is not exactly good advice. 2 or 3 pieces a day but not 'pile your plate high' as suggested. The new SW frozen meals from Iceland are helpful though with the Beef and Red Onion Gravy meal and the Tikka Masala meal there is a lot of water to be drained off the plate after it is cooked. Kind of off putting. One last thing - if you like your wine then you have to make a choice....you will not lose weight unless you give up alcohol as it has more calories than anything you will eat.

“I'm thinner and it's very easy”

written by gillianbc on 02/08/2015

I'm an online member of slimming world and I started with a BMI of 29.2 which means I needed to lose about 2st to get to a healthier BMI of 25. I'm middle aged and things have spread a bit with my sedentary job and lots of cakes and biscuits in the office. This eating plan is working very well, in spite of my scepticism - I find it hard to believe that I can lose weight even though I'm having ample carbs. Unlimited potatoes, rice, pasta. Porridge for breakfast. Loads of mullerlight yogurts, bananas, other fruit, 5% mince, low fat sausages, eggs galore and a nice glass of wine. I eat two cooked meals a day plus my breakfast and snacks and I'm losing an average of 1.3lbs per week. It's slow, sometimes 1/2lb, sometimes 2.5lb but I'm 40% towards my target. I could keep this way of eating up indefinitely. I only knocked off one star as there are improvements that could be made to the website. Finding quick and easy recipe ideas is very helpful, but the site does not allow you to filter by maximum syns per serving, search by ingredients etc. All you can do is browse through page by page.

Although they say you can eat as much as you like (providing it is free food) you still have to have portion control to a degree. Could it be you are eating too much? Or perhaps too much fruit as things like grapes, apples (and much more) have lots of natural sugar.

I have to admit to being a complete fan of Slimming World! I lost my excess weight (five and a half stone), and for the first time ever have kept it off with ease. I'm so pleased that I joined - life changing! However, I really don't think that you should search for the answer to your question on here, but go to someone qualifed, i.e your GP or possibly the consultant at a Slimming World club. If you are then given the go ahead to lose weight the Slimming World way (and I can see no reason why not!), then may I wish you the very best of luck! Stick with it, I found the first three weeks the hardest, then it seemed to 'click' and I never looked back!!
