Written on: 02/05/2011

The Atkins diet worked extremely well for me, think this was because of the lack of carbs, didn't have any cravings or hunger pangs and the weight dropped off, I ate lots of strawberries with canderel and fresh cream as well as sugar free jelly when I fancied a dessert.
I think it's a good way to kick start weight loss, not sure if one could continue indefinitely on this diet but it gave me quickest results in shortest time and made me realise refined carbs, along with processed foods and... (read more)

Written on: 15/04/2011

I have been doing the induction phase for 8 days now. I have lost 7 pounds so far which is fantastic considering I had been going to the gym 4 times a week previous to this and had barely lost a couple of pounds in two months. I can't see this being a long term diet as I am now getting bored with eggs and bacon every morning, however, it is good for a quick kick start into weight loss. I plan to stay away from bread and pasta long term though as I have discovered my stomach feels a lot less... (read more)

Written on: 29/06/2010

Started off very well. Lost a stone in the first 2 weeks, then moved on to the next stage and on from there. After some time I really got sick with the foods, I was really craving for sweets and fruit as before starting the diet I would indulge in fruits in the form of home-made smoothies and on-the-go-snacks. Although I keep eating lots of meat, fish and other high-fat foods, I have eaten more nuts and some other foods not allowed at this stage. This is because I have had severe... (read more)

Since my daughter was born I have been eating as if i'm still pregnant. My daughter is now 16 months and I have struggled to lose the weight. I told my doctor that I couldn't stop with the food cravings and she recommended the Atkins diet to help curve my cravings. It has been a week since I tried this diet, and I have to say my cravings have gone down and I have lost 10 lbs. I have also been going to the gym an hour a day, but I was going to the gym for the past 3 months and only saw a... (read more)

Written on: 09/06/2009

I've lost a little, but no more than on a low fat diet. It most certainly allows you to control hunger, but I found it expensive and requiring quite a bit of planning. I persoanlly found it restrictive and not great at fittting in with family life. The low carb sweets and bars gave me really, really bad wind!!! and the cereal bars were inedible, which totally limits my access to 'sweet' foods. So to me its just not life long as I must be able to eat these things sometimes. However I am... (read more)

Written on: 06/10/2008

Te Atkins diet definitely works, I lost half a stone in practically no time at all. The question to ask is what is the long term effect on my body, the answer is I dont know. The problem with this diet is that it can be quite expensive and there are a lot of changes to your diet and they way you eat. (I know this is true of all diets but Atkins is something a bit different) Another problems with this diet is that the weight can very easily be put back on, and it can happen very quickly. I... Written on: 04/09/2008 by mr tiger fish (1 review written)

You will need to research how the body metabolism works to use Atkins' approach and tune it to your body in the final phases. If you can grasp the idea of insulin response to blood sugar surges, you're most of the way there. The other key concept is ketosis, not to be confused with ketoacidosis. Your body will experience very mild ketosis as it breaks down stored fat to maintain blood sugar levels. Soon, you will know what stable blood sugar level feels like and you will not want to go back... (read more)

You really need to read the book thoroughly to appreciate and fully understand the Atkins Diet and to follow the diet correctly, as there are a lot of untruths and misunderstandings around. I found the Atkins Diet very good. The food I was eating was delicious and satisfying and I did not need to go hungry. If you can cook or have a good idea how to, you can experiment using the foods allowed and create the most wonderful satisfying meals. I did find the powdered shakes quite disgusting... (read more)

I've been on this Atkins Diet-following it 100%, I lost 6 lbs in 3 weeks, and the past week (4th week on it) i've not lost anything. Hi, I've been doing the Atkins for a while now and I have to reply to your question. In order to boost the weight lost you need to do some cardio. For me I noticed that I started loosing and then stopped while on the Atkins. Only when I increased my cardio to almost an hour plus weight lifting that I started loosing again. Hope this helps! Good luck! Loosing weight is not easy. But so easy to gain it all back. You just have to stay focus and have a long term goal... exercise should always be a daily thing or at least 3/4 times a week. :)

Can I ask what you were eating? The range of foods I eat on Atkins are amazing, I eat far healthier now than I ever did either on low fat diets or before I started dieting. Dry meat and veg??? You obviously did not read the book, and if you needed help than there are loads of low carb forums on the net, full of people who have been there, done that, and are full of helpful advice and suggestions ie. http://www.low-carbdiet.co.uk

I started on Atkins in June of 2003. By March of 2004 I had lost a total of 65 pounds and have never felt better! The first phase is the most restrictive, but you can do lots of things with spices, etc. And the Atkins website has tons of recipes for each phase. The liquid shakes are very tasty as are the breakfast bars. You don't necessarily have to purchase Atkins brands in order to get low carb items! The best advice is to thoroughly read the book, get online and get some great recipes (a Google search will reveals thousands of low carb recipes), experiment in the kitchen, and have fun. Losing weight is never easy, but if you keep your goal in mind, you will achieve it! Once you've lost your weight, get rid of your fat clothes! I've maintained my weight loss since 2004. For the UK person, Atkins has a toll free customer service number. It is 1-800-228-5467. You can talk with a live person and get the answers that you need. Good luck!

I totally agree about the lack of support for Atkins in this country.I tried it about 4 years ago and lost 8lbs in 2 weeks, but got fed up looking for low carb cereals/bars etc.Even the recipes are difficult because the ingredients are often unobtainable. An Atkins monthly magazine similar to other slimming clubs would be fab!

Atkins Diet - Considering that after the induction phase you'll find you have reduced sugar cravings and very rarely feel hungry it's a diet - or way of life that must be tried. I used to feel tired or sick if i didn't eat/snack regularly throughout the day, on Atkins I have to force myself to eat just to make sure I have.

I'd say you have to read the book for you to understand the science behind the diet or you are setting yourself up for failure. Going against everything we've ever been... (read more)

I have been doing Atkins for ayear and a half now and notice I'm not groggy anymore, I have tons of energy and have lost a total of 80 lbs. I used to be 54" around the waist, now I'm down to 34". Used to wear size 22-24 in pants. Now I wear 12-14.have more weight to lose before I'm at my target weight.I also excercise now which I never felt like doing, now I can't hardly wait to excercise (weird but true) for me this hasn't been a diet but a change of lifestyle. I'll never go back to the way I was, and I find I don't even miss bread, pasta or potatoes. So anyone thinking about trying Atkins, you really should go for it. You won't be sorry or disappointed. You can leave a comment for me anytime if you need a diet buddy or have any questions.

Written on: 09/12/2003 by Mindy (82 reviews written)

The Atkins Diet, if followed ACCORDING TO THE GUIDELINES IN THE BOOK, is a very very effective low-carb weight loss programme and can also help control blood sugar levels, cholesterol levels and high blood pressure. However, many people find it difficult to follow correctly as it is very restrictive and most people cannot be bothered to read the literature.

The first 2 weeks or so you are very limited as to what foods you can and cannot eat and most people will suffer side effects of... (read more)

Colesmama's Response to Mindy's Review

Written on: 19/12/2003

The Atkins diet isn't about "stocking your fridge with meat and cheese". It may cost more at first to have to replenish your cupboards and fridge full of healthy whole foods, rather than all of the sugar filled junk, but its worth it.
Yes the first 2 week phase may be a bit restrictive food wise, but the amount of weight that you lose is significant ( for most) and definately worth it. You get to add in different foods weekly, and with the "low carb craze", supermarkets are full of low carb substitutions for many favorites.
All in all, it definately takes willpower, but if you want to lose weight this is a wonderful way to do it.

Mindy's Response to Mindy's Review

Written on: 19/12/2003

You're right, it is an important point, that if you follow the diet correctly you only really limit the veg for a few weeks. Many people will find they eat MORE vegetables on Atkins. I did find, however, that rather than eating fully vegetarian meals we were having to buy twice the amounts of meat, cheese, eggs, etc. that we would normally purchase.

It's also worth noting that many people make use of the various low-carb products to supplement the lack of carbs in their diets but these products are often just as unhealthy as the high-carb items they replace and don't deal with the issue of cravings at all.

Kelly Sparey's Response to Mindy's Review

Written on: 24/08/2004

I agree with this review as well as the comments. Just wanted to add that in order for the Atkins 'Diet' to be truly successful long-term, as in for LIFE, the 'dieter' needs to be convicted that certain types of carbs are unhealthy, and view the 4th phase called "Lifetime Maintenance" as a way of eating for LIFE (as the phase title implies). In other words, if you want your weightloss with Atkins to be permanent, you need to be prepared to 'do Atkins' permanently.
This may not be the most helpful comment, but this particular emphasis is really hitting home with me. I notice that I definitely feel better, have more energy, look better (hair, skin, complexion, weight) and eat healthier whole foods when doing Atkins. I gain weight quickly and feel bloated, depressed and sluggish when I go off Atkins. I know what I prefer...it just takes a real commitment to saying 'no' certain carbs.
Oh, and I have a question about low carb alternatives to high carb foods: What low carb immitation brands do you trust to be healthy as well as low carb? (ie. Atkins, Ketogenics, Dietline, CarbRite, etc.)
