Summary

Marks and Spencer Furniture

Marks and Spencer furniture is receiving a lot of 1-star reviews…why?

Both Next and Marks and Spencer top our charts of most-read reviews here at ReviewCentre.com. But mainly for their sofas. Clearly, buying high-street furniture in the UK in 2022 is creating some very opinionated reviewers—and most often in the negative sense. We suspect that post-covid supply chains may explain many of the late delivery complaints. And, in each of its 5-star reviews, M&S is complimented for their impeccable customer service and helpful buying experience. But with over 200, 1-star reviews and fewer than 8% of reviewers willing to recommend this business, what is going on with Marks and Spencer Furniture?

Poor communication about delays

The most irate customers are those whose delivery has been delayed. But what has incensed those customers most is that they were not informed, or kept waiting on the promised day and hour. Like someone who has been stood up on a prom date. And with price tags of several thousands of pounds, who can blame them?

Who makes Marks and Spencers Furniture?

M&S furniture is mostly manufactured and upholstered in the UK by Westbridge Furniture, although their latest line of flatpack furniture is manufactured by William Furniture in China.

Which Marks and Spencer’s designs receive the most complaints?

The Oscar, Copenhagen, Lincoln and Nantucket appear in several poor reviews.  It seems that ‘bad build quality is a common gripe, followed by rapidly fading fabrics, and frequent delivery damage. And who knew that Sofas can be independently checked? Several unhappy reviewers resorted to inviting ‘FIRA’ Assessors to come and provide proof for complaints for their demands for compensation.

“Abbey leather medium sofa and chair”

★★★★☆

written by Ethan150 on 22/04/2015

Had abbey medium leather chestnut sofa and chair delivered today so can't say yet what it is like, however it looks lovely but I have to say the delivery was fantastic, was kept informed all the way, delivery men were spot on time and although we knew it was going to be a tight fit they jiggled and juggled to get it in, very patient, professional men, hope the suite is as good.

“Fantastic delivery service!”

★★★★☆

written by KatJoyWhite on 23/03/2012

I first read this review page when I was frustrated with M&S for being completely useless at sending me fabric samples for a new sofa. These reviews, plus the non-existent samples pushed me to order my sofa elsewhere, but I had already ordered a dressing table and office chair so I was really worried how the delivery was going to go. Turned out to be the best delivery experience I have ever had with any company, plus the furniture is absolutely perfect! I had loads of warning for the delivery slot - including a text 2 days before with a 2-hour time slot, a call first thing in the morning, and another call to say they were on there way. First time in my life that a delivery arrived early as well! The two men that arrived were very polite and efficient. They brought everything up 2 flights of stairs, unpackaged it all, put together the flat-pack pieces and put everything very neatly into place. Plus they took the packaging away with them, which I really appreciated. Other reviews have complained about damaged furniture and poor quality but my stuff is gorgeous and in perfect condition so I am very happy :) However, while today was 5-star service, I still had a lot of annoying moments with M&S along the way (mostly not to do with this order), and I had to wait a bit too long after ordering for me to give 5 stars in this review.

I BOUGHT A ROSINA CORNER SUITE FROM THE MANCHESTER STORE AND FOUND THE STAFF VERY HELPFUL AND FRIENDLY, I HAD THE SUITE DELIVERED ON THE RIGHT DAY AS PROMISED AND THE DRIVERS WERE VERY COURTEOUS AND EVEN PUT COVERS ON THEIR SHOES AND WOULD NOT WALK ON THE CARPET, I AM VERY PLEASED WITH MY NEW CORNER SUITE IT LOOKS REALLY GOOD.

I am considering purchasing M&S ERIN 4 Seater Sofa in Aqua Velvet. Can anyone let me know about quality and comfort please? Apparently they have 4 choices of cushion comfort options. Can you try these in a store and if so which store? I’d hate to purchase and then regret. Thank you

We purchased M&S sofas 2 years ago and bitterly regret it. They are badly made, the arm rests are hard as you can feel the wood through them, the cushions constantly slide off the sofa when sat on and the fabric bobbles. The sofas look and feel really cheap, but weren’t. We did go back to M&S and raise a complaint within 6 months of having the sofas and they sent a company round to review our complaint (a company appointed by them I might add) and they said the sofas were fine. But then ‘they’ are not the ones paying for and using the sofas. I really would advise against purchasing M&S sofas and from any other supplier who uses the same manufacturer.

I've just had a delivery of a range of light oak furniture for my lounge. It was all unpacked by the driver but my husband said it is too large for the room. As it is very near to Christmas what is the procedure for collecting one of the items of furniture?

I am aware that there were manufacturers around 2008 to 2011 who were including a fungicide with their leather furniture which caused, in some cases, severe rashes in some people. However, I did not think that Marks and Spencer were ever associated with this practice. I purchased a Leather (putty colour) sofa and 2 chairs in 2014, but in early 2015 I started with a rash which has lasted for 12 weeks, and has been very very unpleasant to bear. My doctor is referring me to a Dermatologist, and is treating me with medication. I have not sat on the suite now for 3 weeks, but decided to use it again in the last 2 days as a test. The rash is appearing again despite the medication starting to clear it up. Is anybody aware of this problem? I want to be fair to M&S and don't want to blame them if the cause is from something else, but it is now looking suspicious. Can anybody help as I don't really know how to go about this. A friend said that it is an Allergist I need to establish the cause.

I think most of the sofas affected were made in China & I understand M& S sofas are made in the UK. If you need to contact customer services I do hope they have improved since I had to deal with them.
