Me, You and Everyone We Know is an absolutely remarkable film. It's a little bit quirky and very sedate, but there's a lot going on. It follows the routine of Richard, a shoe salesman who has just been left by his wife as he meets Charlotte, an aspiring artist, Richard's two sons and Charlotte. It also looks at the people around them within their community and the ways in which each person's interaction with another person touches their life in a different way. Richard is struggling with readjusting from separating and doesn't quite know how to react to Charlotte. Charlotte feels a connection with Richard and is encouraged by an elderly couple she works for to pursue him as they explain that they had to wait their whole lives to find each other as one of them was dying and that she shouldn't miss out. The gallery owner that Charlotte wants to exhibit her work is lonely and finds a spark in a message left in one of Charlotte's videos. Richard's two sons are dazed by the separation, the elder one bonds with his younger neighbour and the younger one turns to the internet, not realising his chat partner is an adult who thinks he's an adult too. In all these stories the means of connection are slightly unusual, in the case of the younger child almost perverse, yet they are all tender and in each case deliver unexpected types of connections and humanity and understanding between those involved. This is a film which will make you think about your relationships and appreciate them and which will leave you with both a disconcerting feeling about the fragility of it all and a warm glow over the range of possibilities of meaningful interaction with others. All in all it was a wonderful experience watching it and I envy others getting to see it for the first time.
